The 22-year-old 3D-printing schools

 

 

Maggie Grout started the NGO, Thinking Huts, as a teenager, with the aim of 3D-printing schools in countries where some children lack the opportunity to get an education. She has just printed her first school in Madagascar - only the second 3D-printed school in the world. Printing schools is fast, once the printer is set up, and saves on building materials. Maggie says she is motivated to help underprivileged children partly because she was born in poverty in China, before being adopted by American parents. Next year she plans to print a village school in a different part of Madagascar, a country where one in five children do not even attend primary school.

The Ukrainian refugee schoolgirl learning fast in the UK

 

 

 Nine-year-old Marharyta did not speak any English when she first arrived to the UK from her hometown of Lviv in Ukraine, but she's learning fast in preparation for starting school. Marharyta and her mum Larysa moved to Manchester after securing visas through the Ukraine Family Scheme. Hundreds of Ukrainian children have started at schools across England in recent weeks. The government has set out plans to enrol up to 100,000 Ukrainian children who have fled the war in their home country. The National Association of Head Teachers is calling for urgent counselling support and access to specialist language tuition for the refugees once they start school in the UK.

Taliban reverses order on opening schools for girls

The Taliban asked authorities to shutter girls out of middle and high schools in Afghanistan on Wednesday, according to notice by the Ministry of Education. "We inform all girls high schools and those schools that are having female students above class six that they are off until the next order,"

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai has told the BBC that the Taliban will continue to make excuses to prevent girls from learning beyond primary school. Since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, only girls’ primary schools - along with all boys’ schools - have remained open in most of Afghanistan. Girls’ secondary schools were due to open on Wednesday, but the Taliban has reversed its decision saying a ruling is still to be made on the uniforms that girls must wear.
