Like many holidays imported from overseas, Halloween looks a little different here in Japan. Door-to-door trick-or-treating, for example, is yet to catch on, although treats do appear — in the form of Ghost Whoppers, zombie pizzas and candies given out to children by yakuza gang members — and tricks have been largely limited to tricked-out cars and taxis appearing on the roads during Halloween.

Recently, however, there’s been a marked shift towards Halloween becoming a night to get drunk, run riot, and do all the things you’d never dream of doing on any other night of the year.

So when people in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture, saw a police car drive by on the night of Halloween with a civilian waving at everyone from the open front passenger window, they immediately feared someone had just run off with a police officer’s vehicle.

 It's a sad day for children in Kobe as they'll no longer be able to trick or treat with the Yakuza thanks to the Hyogo prefectural government has voted to make it illegal for children to enter the compound of the Yamaguchi-gumi Japan's largest organize crime group. 

  The criminal organization has been handing out candy at Halloween at its Kobe HQ since 2013, beckoning kids to step inside the gates and onto the grounds of their complex with calls of “Happy Halloween!” and “Come on in and get your candy!” However, local children with a sweet tooth will have to get their fix elsewhere this year, as the Yamaguchi-gumi is now legally barred from giving sweets to trick-or-treaters.

This week the Prefectural Assembly of Hyogo, the prefecture Kobe is a part of, voted unanimously to revise the Organized Crime Exclusion Ordinances, adding provisions that make it illegal for a criminal organization to give gifts (monetary or otherwise) to minors, invite them onto the grounds of their facilities, or correspond with them. Exceptions are made for “legitimately justifiable reasons,” but handing out snacks in a blatant attempt to curry favor with young children doesn’t cut it, legislators say.

With Operation Eagle Eye in full force in Japan or perhaps Big Brother, like in London there are cameras every where.   Hence the scofflaws are now in major legal trouble.

Surely we all remember and were collectively angered by the incidents that occurred in parts of the Shibuya Halloween street party which culminated in a small band of men flipping over a lightweight truck and then dancing in it.

A few weeks later police announced a series of arrests in connection with the incident. But whenever I read about these kinds of arrests I always wonder how they find these people, especially in this case where it was a handful of people in a sea of about 40,000.

According to a report by Mainichi Shinbun, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police used a technique called a Relay Method. This method uses a network of security cameras both owned by the police and private companies to track individuals. That still sounds easier said than done, but the police get a big help from Tokyo’s extensive public transportation system.

Japanese band sparks anger with Nazi-style Halloween costumes

  How ignorant does one have to be to not see the resemblance between these costumes  and Waffen SS uniforms?

A popular Japanese girl band set up by an executive board member of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics organising committee has been criticised for giving a Halloween concert in costumes modelled on Nazi Waffen-SS uniforms.

Keyakizaka46, a spin-off of the phenomenally popular AKB48 J-pop stable formed by Yasushi Akimoto, donned black military-style costumes similar to those worn by the paramilitary wing of Hitler’s Nazi party. Publicity photos showed members wearing peaked caps featuring a bird insignia that resembles the Parteiadler eagle emblem of the Nazis.
