Venezuela gas shortage makes quarantine unavoidable


Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, so it comes as a surprise to some that gasoline has been in short supply there for years. Without fuel it could be easier to keep to coronavirus lockdown regulations, but at what cost? The shortage has now reached unsustainable levels, and is hitting the capital Caracas in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why NASA quarantined the Apollo 11 astronauts


It was an unusual process for an unprecedented task: keeping potential moon germs from entering the Earth’s atmosphere (and affecting its population). To try to isolate the Apollo astronauts from the Earth, NASA went to extraordinary lengths. They clothed them in “Biological Isolation Garments,” transported them on a converted Airstream trailer, and then quarantined them for weeks in a Lunar Receiving Lab specially built to analyze moon samples and, of course, the men who went there.

Coronavirus in China



For weeks now China has been in lockdown because of the new coronavirus. Journalist Sebastien Le Belzic who works in Beijing has been living in quarantine at home with his family. China is taking drastic measures in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus. New rules are springing up on a daily basis and the government depends on loyal party members to enforce these measures at grassroots level. Since the early days of China’s communist revolution, neighborhood committee members have helped police the behavior of their neighbors, reporting back any perceived misdemeanors to people at the top.

Hard surfaces, easy-to-clean floors and separate heating-and-cooling units in each room: the amenities offered by the suburban EconoLodge motel may not be fancy, but they were just what Seattle-area officials say they were looking for in a quarantine facility for coronavirus patients.
Officials in King County, which is dealing with the worst Covid-19 outbreak in the United States, announced this week that it is buying the motel for $4 million (£3.7m). The deal is expected to close on Friday and officials hope to have the first patients in within days.
But not everyone is putting out the welcome mat.

US citizen Ningxi Xu describes what it's like to live under quarantine for coronavirus after evacuating from Wuhan.
She managed to get on the first civilian flight out of the city and is part way through her 14-day quarantine at a military base in San Diego.
The World Health Organization has named the virus, which has claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people, Covid-2019. Tens of thousands of people have been infected.

Briton reveals life on cruise ship as fellow passenger tests positive for coronavirus


David Abel says in video update on Facebook that he had been dining with fellow Briton who tested positive for coronavirus on a cruise ship docked in Japan. He said Alan Steele was on honeymoon and would be separated from his wife as he was taken off the ship for treatment.
