Some Ukrainian families have been living in a metro station in the country’s second largest city of Kharkiv for more than three months.

With no fresh air or access to washing facilities, disease has spread easily. But they say they have nowhere else to go and are now worried about being evicted, after local authorities reopened the metro.

A 30-metre sinkhole on a busy street in the Japanese city of Fukuoka has been repaired astonishingly quickly. The sinkhole appeared on 8 November and caused power cuts, disrupted phone signals, and gas and water supplies. Officials reopened the road to traffic on Tuesday 15 November after health and safety checks

In a typical demonstration of Japanese workmanship and efficiency, workers toiled around the clocks and had practically filled in the section of road in just two days, according to local media.

The road reopened to traffic and pedestrians early on Tuesday after local officials declared the repaired stretch safe.

The weeklong rush to reopen the busy stretch of road included repairs to a sewage pipe and replacing traffic lights and utility poles that were swallowed when the sinkhole opened up shortly after 5am local time on 8 November.
