Twitter suspends journalists who have been covering Elon Musk and the company

Twitter suspended several high-profile journalists Thursday evening who have been covering the company and Elon Musk.

The suspensions come a day after Twitter changed its policies around accounts that track private jets, including one owned by Elon Musk.

The accounts of Ryan Mac of The New York Times, Donie O'Sullivan of CNN, Drew Harwell of The Washington Post, Matt Binder of Mashable, Micah Lee of The Intercept and independent journalists Aaron Rupar and Tony Webster had all been suspended as of Thursday evening.

Twitter on Thursday afternoon, adding onto an already controversial week of content moderation decisions by new platform owner Elon Musk. 

New York Times reporter Ryan Mac, The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell, Mashable’s Matt Binder, CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan, and independent journalist Aaron Rupar were removed from the platform in a late afternoon purge. The removed accounts shared a common thread of critical coverage of Musk and his management and policy decisions following his October takeover of Twitter. 

Also removed from twitter was an account run by freelance journalist Tony Webster, who shared on Mastodon, that he was booted from his account with no warning. “My Twitter account has been suspended,” he wrote with a screenshot of his suspended account. “I’ve received no explanation.”

The social media service, which is owned by Elon Musk, said the accounts were suspended for “violating the Twitter rules” but did not provide details.

Twitter suspended the accounts of roughly half a dozen journalists on Thursday, the latest change by the social media service under its new owner, Elon Musk.

The accounts suspended included Ryan Mac of The New York Times; Drew Harwell of The Washington Post; Aaron Rupar, an independent journalist; Donie O’Sullivan of CNN; Matt Binder of Mashable; Tony Webster, an independent journalist; and the political journalist Keith Olbermann. It was unclear what the suspensions had in common; each user’s Twitter page included a message that said it was suspended for “violating the Twitter rules.”

Millions of people unable to tweet or share stories after site goes down

Social media platform Twitter appears to have suffered an outage in many countries across the world, leaving millions of users unable to post on its platform.

The entire Twitter site went down for a number of minutes and, although it was quickly brought back online, users have been unable to tweet or retweet anything for nearly an hour.

Those who attempt to post are met with an error message stating Twitter is “overcapacity”, or a note simple stating “Oops, something went wrong”.

Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order that could erode legal protections for social media companies for content posted on their platforms.

The move would also allow federal regulators and state-level prosecutors to sanction companies that in the government’s judgment are not even-handed in their editorial practices.

To People Who Don't Understand The 1st Amendment Of The U.S.

First:  Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter among many others aren't covered by the 1st amendment as they are private companies. Thus they set the terms of use not the U.S. government.   So, with James Woods being suspended by Twitter for violations of its terms is not an infringement on his rights to free speech. 

As noted earlier KUOW the NPR station decided to stop airing the coronavirus briefings because of misinformation and false hoods.  This does not mean that the briefings have been blacklisted a term from the Red Scare era of Sen. Joseph McCarthy.  The station clearly stated that they would report on relevant facts disseminated from the briefings.   American broadcasters have no obligation to air live briefings  by the president or anyone else.
