Tonga Volcano & Tsunami LIVE NEWS UPDATES

 


The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano in Tonga erupted powerfully on Saturday, and caused several tsunami waves that impacted Tonga. It has been difficult to get updates from Tonga because communications have been largely cut off.


How the Tonga volcano has been felt around the world


 

A large underwater volcano in Tonga has sent huge swells around the world affecting countries bordering the Pacific Ocean. The tsunami waves caused damage to boats as far away as New Zealand and large swells were seen in California and Japan but did not appear to cause any widespread damage. Two people have drowned off a beach in northern Peru, local authorities say, after unusually high waves were recorded in several coastal areas

New Zealand: Trapped in the Volcano



We investigate how a luxury cruise turned into a deadly nightmare when a volcano erupted on New Zealand's White Island.


It was meant to be the cruise of a lifetime.
A trip on Ovation of the Seas promised the opportunity to get up close to New Zealand's renowned natural beauty.
But on the afternoon of December 9, 2019, tragedy struck.
Cruise ship passengers and other day-trippers became trapped in the middle of a volcanic eruption on White Island - 21 people died, 19 of them were from the Ovation of the Seas.

Krakatoa - The Great Volcanic Eruption


On 27th August 1883 the uninhabited island of Krakatoa blew itself out of existence with an explosion the equivalent power of 150 million tonnes of TNT. The eruption was so loud that the sound was heard over a twelfth of the Earth’s surface, the shockwaves reverberated around the entire planet, seven times. This explosion also caused giant tsunami, the largest of them twice the height of those of 2004. These enormous waves wiped out 165 Indonesian towns and villages killing over 36,000 people. Within hours news of the disaster was transmitted around the globe, and scientists of the time struggled to comprehend the geological forces that caused the tragedy
