Magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes in Indonesia, sparking tsunami alert

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck the Northern Molucca Sea region in Indonesia, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake, which hit early on Thursday local time, had depth of 35km and its epicenter was 127km (79 miles) west-northwest of Ternate, Indonesia, the USGS said.

The US tsunami warning system said tsunami waves were possible with 1,000km of the epicentre, along the coasts of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia. It warned that tsunami waves reaching 0.3 metres to one metre (3.2ft) above the tide level were possible for some of the Indonesian coastline.

By comparing the tree rings of dead trees with those still living they could tell when the last of these great earthquakes struck the region. The trees all died in the winter of 1699-1700 when the coasts of northern California, Oregon, and Washington suddenly dropped 1-2 m (3-6 ft.), flooding them with seawater. That much motion over such a large area requires a very large earthquake to explain it—perhaps as large as 9.2 magnitude, comparable to the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964 [you can see photos in the gallery above].

Such an earthquake would have ruptured the earth along the entire length of the 1000 km (600 mi) -long fault of the Cascadia Subduction Zone and severe shaking could have lasted for 5 minutes or longer. Its tsunami would cross the Pacific Ocean and reach Japan in about 9 hours, so the earthquake must have occurred around 9 o'clock at night in Cascadia on January 26, 1700 (05:00 January 27 UTC).

US Geological Survey says 7.8-magnitude earthquake has hit central New Zealand, prompting a tsunami warning.

A powerful magnitude 7.8-magnitude earthquake has rocked New Zealand, prompting a tsunami warning and knocking out power and phone services in many parts of the country.

The US Geological Survey said the shallow temblor hit 90km from the South Island city of Christchurch, which was devastated five years ago by a 6.3 tremor.

That quake killed 185 people in one of New Zealand's deadliest disasters.

Monday's earthquake, initially put at 7.4 but later upgraded, struck at 12:02am local time (1102 GMT on Sunday).
