Greek voters overwhelmingly reject bailout terms

With 70 percent of votes counted, results show Greeks rejecting terms of international bailout by 61 to 39 percent.

With two-thirds of the votes counted, results show Greeks have rejected the terms of international bailout by 61 percent to 39 percent.

Voters had been asked on Sunday whether to accept or reject the country's multi-billion euro bailout deal with the European Union.

Polling booths closed at 16:00 GMT on Sunday, with ten million Greeks eligible to vote.
With 70 percent of the total votes counted, the "No" vote was leading with 61.5 percent, against 38.5 percent for the "Yes" vote.

Senior German conservative Michael Fuchs told the Reuters news agency that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had caused a "disaster". "I very much regret the result," Fuchs said by telephone.

Thanks to austerity Greece has endured depression levels of economic regression. With youth unemployment at more than 50% and little left in the way of a social safety net. So, why wouldn't the Greeks vote no on austerity which will just drive the country further down the economic drain with little hope of recovery.
