US election 2016: Clinton hails 'milestone for women'

Hillary Clinton has thanked her supporters for helping her reach a historic moment for women - the US Democratic nomination for president.
"Thanks to you, we've reached a milestone," she told cheering crowds at a rally in New York.
She hailed "the first time in our nation's history that a woman will be a major party's nominee".
Earlier, Mrs Clinton won the Democratic primary in New Jersey, cementing her hold on her party's nomination.
She went on to win South Dakota and New Mexico, while her rival Bernie Sanders found victory in the Montana and North Dakota caucuses.

'I want to rescue my dad': children's heartbreak for the lawyers China has taken away
Li Heping’s six-year-old daughter Li Jiamei dresses as a superhero, hoping to free her human rights lawyer father from prison

With a superhero’s green and blue cape cascading down her back, Li Jiamei skipped into her Beijing nursery wielding a pink plastic sword.
When classmates asked the Chinese schoolgirl who she had come to the Halloween fancy dress party as, she had an immediate reply.
“I want to be a knight!” Li declared. “That way I can rescue my dad!”

For all her gallantry, it is a battle the six-year-old is unlikely to win.
Li Jiamei is the daughter of Li Heping, a top Chinese human rights lawyer who has not been heard of since he disappeared into the custody of China’s security services in July 2015.

Global Peace Index 2016: There are now only 10 countries in the world that are actually free from conflict

We are now further away from world peace than at any time in the past 10 years - and its creating a global 'peace inequality' gap

The world is becoming a more dangerous place and there are now just 10 countries which can be considered completely free from conflict, according to authors of the 10th annual Global Peace Index.
The worsening conflict in the Middle East, the lack of a solution to the refugee crisis and an increase in deaths from major terrorist incidents have all contributed to the world being less peaceful in 2016 than it was in 2015.
And there are now fewer countries in the world which can be considered truly at peace – in other words, not engaged in any conflicts either internally or externally – than there were in 2014.

Video: IS group use steamroller to crush satellite dishes, block TV access

Satellite dishes are the Islamic State jihadist organisation’s newest victims. The group recently published two videos showing the destruction of satellite dishes in towns that it controls.

Two videos published last week by the Islamic State group offer proof of its campaign to control information within its territories [Editor's note: France 24 does not publish videos by IS or include links to the videos in its articles]. Both videos begin with propaganda speeches given by IS militants. The first video was filmed in Nineveh, Iraq. In it, members of the IS group say that satellite dishes “bring sedition into our hearts” and that a society that uses these dishes “is a society that’s far away from God”.

The IS group made the second video around the same time in Raqqa, the Syrian city that the group has effectively made into its capital. In the second video, a militant condemns households with satellite dishes, saying that people who own them prefer to “listen to enemies and shows produced by traitors” instead of imans or IS leaders. Satellite dishes give people in IS-occupied areas access to international channels and there is a growing black market for them.

Bangkok: Police investigating Thailand's now closed Tiger Temple have found what they believe is a slaughterhouse and holding facility used by a suspected animal trafficking network.
The discovery of four live tigers and a dozen empty cages in a house 50 kilometres from the temple in western Kanchanaburi province comes as police widen investigations into wildlife trafficking to inspect 30 zoos nationwide.
The zoos will be required to verify they are operating legally.
Police colonel Montri Pancharoen told reporters that police raided the house in an isolated area surrounded by tall fence after a tip-off.

Israel approves new homes in East Jerusalem settlement

Israeli NGO announces approval of building permits for 82 new homes in illegal Jewish settlement near Shuafat area.

Israeli authorities have approved building permits for 82 new homes in the illegal settlement of Ramat Shlomo, a neighbourhood near Shuafat in occupied East Jerusalem, an Israeli NGO has said.
"On Monday, June 6, the Jerusalem Local Planning and Building Committee approved two building permits for 82 housing units in Ramat Shlomo," Ir Amim, a group that opposes settlement construction, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The settlement, which already houses more than 15,000 Israeli Jews, lies in close proximity to the Palestinian neighbourhood of Shuafat.
