Trump says Putin 'a leader far more than our president'

Donald Trump has showered Vladimir Putin with praise as he and rival Hillary Clinton took pointed questions from military veterans.
The Republican presidential nominee told the forum the Russian president "has been a leader far more than our president [Obama] has been".
It came on the same day the chief of the Pentagon accused Russia of sowing the seeds of global instability.
Mrs Clinton, meanwhile, defended her judgment despite her email scandal.
The White House candidates appeared back to back on stage in half-hour segments at the Intrepid Air and Sea Museum in New York on Wednesday night.

Beijing warns US to stay out of South China Sea dispute

Obama hits back by telling Asian leaders China must abide by the international tribunal ruling that its claims to the area have no legal basis

China has sent a coded warning to the United States to stay out of the South China Sea dispute after Beijing was again accused of building permanent structures on islands in the area.
Speaking after talks with rival countries at a regional summit in Laos, premier Li Keqiang said China wanted to work with other countries to “dispel interference” in the contested maritime zone.
But US president Barack Obama responded by warning that Beijing must abide by an international tribunal ruling that China’s sweeping claims to the South China Sea had no legal basis.

A female fighter nicknamed the 'Kurdish Angelina Jolie' has reportedly been killed in a battle against Isis on the Syrian-Turkey border, Syrian Kurdish media has said.
22-year-old Asia Ramazan Antar died in fighting near MinbiƧ, a town recently liberated from Isis control.
Norway-based Kurdish supporters 'We want Freedom fo Kurdistan' said in a post on Facebook that Antar died while fighiting Isis, but there are also reports circulating that she was killed whilst fighting Turkish-backed Syrian opposition fighters.
Antar belonged to the Women's Protection Units, a group of around 7-10,000 female fighters allied to the Democratic Union Party in the Kurdish region of Syria.  She joined the group in 2014 and took part in several campaigns against the terror group.

Bodyguard’s surprise question to John Kerry amuses some Egyptians

When it comes to their president’s security, the Egyptian authorities don’t mess around. US Secretary of State John Kerry saw this firsthand on September 1. As he was about to go into a meeting with Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in New Delhi – the two politicians were in India at the time – an Egyptian bodyguard asked Kerry whether he had a phone or a camera on him, before letting him meet Sisi.
The scene was filmed by Indian press agency ANI. It shows Kerry heading toward the room where the Egyptian president is waiting. He shakes hands with one of the men in charge of Sisi’s security, who asks him, “no mobile, no camera?” Kerry, clearly surprised, asks: “What?” The guard insists: “No mobile, no camera?” Kerry abruptly replies “no”, and moves on.

South China Sea: China building more islands?

Updated 0812 GMT (1612 HKT) September 8, 2016

Is China building more islands in the disputed waters of the South China Sea?
The Philippines military this week released images of Chinese ships it said were capable of dredging sand around the Scarborough Shoal -- a small but strategic reef and fertile fishing ground 130 miles (200 km) west from the Philippine island of Luzon.
Beijing has denied it is reclaiming land, saying that while Chinese coastguard vessels patrol the waters around the shoal, which it calls Huangyandao, they were there for "law enforcement."

Hungary indicts camerawoman who kicked refugees

Petra Laszlo charged with disorderly conduct after she was filmed kicking and tripping refugees fleeing police.

Hungarian prosecutors have filed charges against a camerawoman who was filmed kicking and tripping refugees fleeing police near the country's southern border with Serbia last year.
Petra Laszlo was charged on Wednesday for disorderly conduct after "she kicked a young man in the shin with a swift kick of the sole of her right foot, and also kicked young girl around the knee with her right foot", prosecutors said in a statement, according to Reuters news agency.
Prosecutors also said Laszlo had "kicked toward a man carrying a child in his hands, but the kick did not reach the man", in one of the accusations she had faced during last year's online furore.
