World holds breath for Trump's Iran deal decision

Updated 0816 GMT (1616 HKT) May 8, 2018

President Donald Trump on Tuesday can land his most devastating blow yet on the legacy of Barack Obama, but a move to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal could also spark a dangerous global crisis.
The decision could mark a signature moment for Trump's presidency.
It gives him the chance to cement his "America First" philosophy but risks triggering unknowable consequences that in a worst case scenario could lead to war with Iran.
The decision gives the President a choice. Does he follow his instincts and honor a campaign promise to his loyal political base? Or does he risk dealing a severe rebuke to US allies who back the deal by re-imposing US sanctions on Iran?

Italy's deal with Libya to 'pull back' migrants faces legal challenge

Migrants who are returned to Libya subjected to grave human rights violations, lawsuit claims

Italy’s collaboration with Libya to stop migrants reaching Europe is facing a legal challenge over allegations that it has led to grave human rights violations against those crossing the Mediterranean, including torture and slavery.
A lawsuit filed in the European court of human rights (ECHR) alleges that Italy’s work with the Libyan coastguard, which has stopped migrant boats at Italy’s behest and forced thousands of people to return to Libya against their will, has subjected them to inhumane conditions, beatings, rape and starvation.
The lawsuit, based on the account of 17 survivors of a boat sinking who were taken back to Libya, could pose a serious threat to a deal struck last year between Italy’s centre-left government and Libya. It was endorsed by European leaders and has been credited with dramatically lowering the number of migrants arriving on Italy’s southern coast.

Eric Schneiderman: What are the allegations against New York attorney general who was prosecuting Weinstein?

Schneiderman has resigned following claims made by four women in US media

New York’s top law enforcement officer has been accused by multiple women of sexual assault, leading him to resign his post with almost immediate effect
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is accused by four women who say they were in relationships with him at the time. They say he hit them, multiple times and without their consent, and threatened violence on several occasions if they were to report him to police or leave him.
The allegations were brought in interviews with the New Yorker, and two of the four women agreed to let the magazine disclose their names publicly.

India's problem with rape: Do women feel safe?

Updated 0835 GMT (1635 HKT) May 8, 2018
New Delhi (CNN) A series of brutal rape cases in India has shocked the country to its core, placing the issue of sexual violence firmly back on the national agenda.
The incidents, including two alleged unrelated attacks on girls aged 16 and eight, have given rise to protests comparable to the rallies that followed the highly-publicized gang rape of a female college student in Delhi in 2012.
As with the events six years ago, the attacks have prompted demands for stricter rape laws.
Responding to the outrage, India's Cabinet has passed an executive order introducing the death penalty for rapists of children under the age of 12. The change in law is awaiting approval from parliament.
