Iran nuclear deal not dead despite US exit, France says

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian says the Iranian nuclear deal is "not dead" despite US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw.
The 2015 agreement curbed Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of sanctions that had been imposed by the UN, US and EU.
But Mr Trump argued that the deal was "defective at its core", saying he would pull out and reimpose sanctions.
Other signatories to the nuclear accord say they remain committed to it.
The deal was agreed between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, UK, France, China and Russia - plus Germany.

Deadly journeys: how despair drives young Ethiopians to flee to Yemen

“We met in the desert,” says Badru Mohammed, gesturing at his three companions. The four Ethiopian boys pause for breath and refreshment beside the road, grasping their plastic water bottles tightly as they sip, careful not to waste a drop. The Djiboutian sun is still low in the sky but the road is already hot. They have more than 200km left to walk and their plastic sandals are disintegrating.
Badru and friends are from Jimma, a poor farming district in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. Over the past fortnight they have travelled more than 1,000km from their homes, first on buses and then later on foot, jumping the border into neighbouring Djibouti under the cover of darkness. When the group gathered in Dire Dawa, a town in the arid drylands of eastern Ethiopia a couple of hundred kilometres from the border, there were 20 of them. “Most are left in the desert,” says Badru wearily. “They are very tired. I don’t think they can follow us.”

Trump promised and delivered on Iran. Never mind that he fabricated and misled all along the way

Trump is fixated on fulfilling promises made to his base. He has pulled out of this deal because he could

One of the principal complaints against Donald Trump’s foreign policy is its incoherence. He quits a Pacific trade deal then ponders rejoining it. He abandons the Paris climate train before teasing about barging back on board. Steel tariffs for all! Well, unless you are exempted.
Trump has said it’s not chaos he’s presiding over but a conscious strategy. “We must as a nation be more unpredictable,” he said during the 2016 campaign. That way, he reasons everyone is kept on their toes. Vladimir Putin could read Barack Obama like a book. Not so him.

China, Japan, South Korea agree on North Korea nuclear action

In the first trilateral talks since 2015, the leaders of China, Japan and South Korea sent a powerful message of unity in the push to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. Trade deals were also on the table.
China, Japan and South Korea agreed Wednesday to work together to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. The trilateral summit in Tokyo also saw Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang discuss regional free trade agreements.
Moon briefed his counterparts on his April 27 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
In his opening remarks, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, lauded the efforts of China and South Korea to get North Korea to the negotiating table.

Mormon church to end 105-year relationship with the Boy Scouts

Updated 0514 GMT (1314 HKT) May 9, 2018
The Mormon church is parting ways with the Boy Scouts of America after more than a century.
In a joint statement Tuesday night, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Boy Scouts of America announced their decision to end their relationship next year after 105 years.
The Boy Scouts serves about 330,000 Mormon youths, and the Mormon church is one of its largest sponsors.
"We have jointly determined that, effective on December 31, 2019, the church will conclude its relationship as a chartered organization with all Scouting programs around the world," the statement said.

Former CIA Chief John Brennan: Trump’s ‘Madness Is A Danger To Our National Security

Trump has “undermined global confidence in U.S. commitments” and “alienated our closest allies,” Brennan said.

Former CIA Director John Brennan ripped President Donald Trump over his decision on Tuesday to pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear treaty.

Brennan, now an analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, made similar comments on the air.
“This is not just foolish, this is dangerous,” he said. “And Mr. Trump has repeatedly misrepresented the facts of the nuclear deal with Iran. He’s basically lied to the American people and lied to the world about what that deal entails.”
Brennan was not alone in criticizing the move. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany issued a joint statement expressing “regret and concern.” In Iran, one lawmaker said “Trump does not have the mental capacity to deal with issues,” and members of parliament burned a paper version of an American flag and a symbolic copy of the Iran deal.
