Huge risk if global warming exceeds 1.5C, warns landmark UN report

Urgent changes needed to cut risk of extreme heat, drought, floods and poverty, says IPCC

The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.
The authors of the landmark report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released on Monday say urgent and unprecedented changes are needed to reach the target, which they say is affordable and feasible although it lies at the most ambitious end of the Paris agreementpledge to keep temperatures between 1.5C and 2C.

Meng Hongwei: Ex-Interpol president under investigation for bribery and 'wilfulness', China says

Public security vice-minister detained after 'bringing trouble upon himself', Beijing says
Meng Hongwei, the missing former Interpol chief, is under investigation for bribery and other offences in China, government authorities there said.
China’s Ministry of Public Security suggested that political sins may have been behind Mr Meng’s detention, saying he was being investigated due to his own “wilfulness and for bringing trouble upon himself”.
“The investigation against Meng Hongwei’s taking bribes and suspected violations of law is very timely, absolutely correct and rather wise,” the ministry said in a statement following an internal meeting.

Brazil elections: Bolsonaro to face off with Fernando Haddad in second round

Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro has fallen short of the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a run-off vote. Fernando Haddad, the stand-in for jailed former President Luiz Inacio da Silva, came second.
Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro will face leftist Fernando Haddad in the second round of Brazil's presidential election, scheduled for October 28.
Bolsonaro got roughly 46 percent of the first-round votes, while Fernando Haddad from the Workers' Party was in second place with just under 29 percent.

FT journalist given seven days to leave Hong Kong

A leading Financial Times journalist has been given seven days to leave Hong Kong as a backlash mounted Monday against an unprecedented challenge to freedom of the press in the city.
Victor Mallet, the FT's Asia news editor and a British national, angered authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong by hosting a speech at the city's press club by Andy Chan, the leader of a tiny pro-independence political party.
Chan's party has since been banned as Beijing cracks down on any pro-independence sentiment in the semi-autonomous city.

Erdogan on Saudi journalist missing in Turkey: 'I am chasing' investigation

Updated 0601 GMT (1401 HKT) October 8, 2018

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he is personally "chasing" the investigation into prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi who went missing after entering the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Istanbul last week.
The President's comments came after unnamed Turkish officials told the The Washington Post and Reuters on Saturday that Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate. The officials have so far provided no evidence or details on how they arrived at this conclusion.
"I am following it up as the President of the Turkish Republic," Erdogan told reporters in Ankara on Sunday, while also confirming that he had known Khashoggi for some time and considered him a friend.

Climate report: Scientists urge deep rapid change to limit warming

It's the final call, say scientists, the most extensive warning yet on the risks of rising global temperatures.
Their dramatic report on keeping that rise under 1.5 degrees C states that the world is now completely off track, heading instead towards 3C.
Staying below 1.5C will require "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society".
It will be hugely expensive, the report says, but the window of opportunity is not yet closed.
After three years of research and a week of haggling between scientists and government officials at a meeting in South Korea, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued a special report on the impact of global warming of 1.5C.
