Venezuela crisis: Maduro closing border with Brazil

Venezuela's embattled President Nicolás Maduro has ordered the closure of the border with Brazil amid a row over foreign humanitarian aid.
The leftist leader went on TV to say he was also considering shutting the border with Colombia to stop the opposition bringing in relief.
He denies any crisis and calls the aid delivery plans a US-orchestrated show.
Opposition leader Juan Guaidó is leading a convoy from the capital, Caracas, to the Colombian border.
Later on Friday, a concert will be held on the Colombian side of the border to raise money for Venezuela. At the same time, Mr Maduro's government will hold its own event, reportedly just 300 metres away.

He added that the country would divert water from eastern rivers and supply it to its people in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab states.

Culture of abuse and violence at the heart of some of South Korea's biggest companies

Updated 0349 GMT (1149 HKT) February 22, 2019

Forced to kneel and assaulted for forgetting to buy ginger. Kicked and spat on for being late. Drenched with water for driving too slowly. Struck on the forehead with a mop handle for seemingly no reason.
This is just some of the physical and verbal abuse allegedly committed by Lee Myung-hee, matriarch of the Korean Air dynasty, against her staff. The alleged abuse -- which took place between 2013 and 2017 -- is detailed in a new criminal indictment against Lee, released by a South Korean lawmaker this month.
Lee denies the charges against her, she did not respond to requests for comment. In a statement, Korean Air parent company Hanjin Group said: "We acknowledge that some of the assaults are factual and we are sorry."

Wallace's giant bee, world's largest, refound by scientists

Team of international researchers finds the first specimens of the giant insect in Indonesia's North Moluccas islands.

The world's largest bee, which had not been documented by scientists since 1981, has been rediscovered by a team of conservationists and international researchers in a remote part of Indonesia.
The team found the first specimens of Megachile Pluto, an insect commonly known as Wallace's giant bee that is roughly the size of a human thumb, in the archipelago's North Moluccas islands last month.
On Thursday, they released images and video of a nest and its queen, saying their find was the "holy grail" of species discoveries.

Germany sees sharp rise in deportations to North Africa

More and more rejected asylum-seekers are being sent back to Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, according to a new report. The German government wants to designate the countries as "safe" in order to accelerate the process.
Last year saw a 35 percent rise in the number of people deported to the Maghreb states of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, the Rheinische Post reported on Friday, citing the German Interior Ministry.
Germany deported a total of 1,873 rejected asylum-seekers to the northern African countries last year, compared to 1,389 in 2017.
The number of deportations to the region last year was nearly 14 times higher than in 2015, the paper reported.
Morocco saw the most dramatic increase, with the number of deportees rising from 634 to 826.

French President’s Promise to Crack Down on Anti-Semitism Could Threaten Critics of Israel

February 22 2019,

THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT will instruct police officers and magistrates to investigate critics of Israel who question its right to exist as a Jewish nation-state for possible violations of the law against anti-Semitic hate speech, President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday night.
“Anti-Semitism hides more and more behind the mask of anti-Zionism,” Macron said in an address to the Council of Jewish Institutions in France. “Anti-Zionism is one of the modern forms of anti-Semitism.”
The French president added that France would adopt a definition of anti-Semitism proposed by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. That definition has been condemned by supporters of Palestinian rights for including as an example of anti-Semitism: “Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.”
