Violence flares at Venezuela's border; Maduro breaks off relations with Colombia

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro severed diplomatic relations with Colombia on Saturday as violence broke out along the two countries' borders, where international aid intended for Venezuela is awaiting transport.
After opposition leader Juan Guaido named Saturday as the deadline for the aid to cross the border, Maduro vowed to stop the supplies from coming into the country, calling the plan part of a coup attempt.
These are the highlights from Saturday:

Weakened NATOEurope's Immense Security Challenges in the Age of Trump

The trans-Atlantic alliance has been significantly weakened, forcing Europe to build up its own security structures without inflicting even more damage on NATO. Is such a thing even possible?

The timing of the article could hardly have been better. On Feb. 12, just three days before the beginning of last weekend's Munich Security Conference, it was published on the website of the U.S. magazine National Interest. And it quickly became a topic of fevered discussion among conference participants, particularly those from Europe. "Dump NATO," blared the headline.

The piece wasn't written by a no-name. Its author is Christian Whiton, a former State Department adviser during the administrations of both President George W. Bush and Donald Trump. His central message in the piece is that the United States should back out of NATO. The sooner the better.

Where Jesus once preached, the holy waters are draining away

Climate change and conflict have left the river Jordan a stagnant stream and the Sea of Galilee critically low

If Jesus were alive today, he might reconsider a baptism in the river Jordan; there’s a good chance he’d pick up an eye infection. Faecal bacteria in the pungent, murky waters have risen in recent years to up to six times the recommended levels.
Once a raging torrent, the lower Jordan has been starved of water to become a stagnant stream, filled with sewage and dirty run-off from farms. Around 95% of its historical flow has been diverted by agriculture during the past half-century. And the river’s primary source, the Sea of Galilee – where Christians believe the son of God walked on water – has for years been dammed to prevent its demise.

Scientists who discovered ‘amphibian plague’ worried a dangerous new hybrid disease will emerge

‘Unless you stop international travel and international trade, things like this are going to continue... something is going to get through’

The team that cracked the case of the “amphibian plague” devastating frog and toad populations around the world are worried that worse is still to come.
A killer fungus known as Bd has triggered a mass amphibian extinction that has spread across every continent and been described as among the worst infectious diseases ever recorded.
Scientists have described rainforests struck silent as the plague wiped out entire populations of local frogs in mere months, stifling their night-time chorus of croaks.

Kim Jong-un leaves North Korea for Vietnam by train

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has departed for Hanoi by train for talks with US President Donald Trump.
He arrived at the Chinese border city of Dandong after 21:00 local time (13:00 GMT) on Saturday.
The much anticipated second US-North Korea summit is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in the Vietnamese capital.
It follows a historic first round of talks last year in Singapore. All eyes will be on what if any progress is made towards "denuclearisation".
The departure, confirmed by North Korean state media, is the first official acknowledgement that the talks are taking place.
