The American PatientHow Trump Is Fueling a Corona Disaster

"I never would have thought I would ever have to do something like this,” Greg Turner says with a bitter smile, as if he feels he has to apologize. It’s a rainy gray Monday afternoon in Alameda, California. Turner, 55, who sports a beard and a cap, is one of dozens of Americans who have lined up to enter the city’s food bank. When asked if he has lost his job, he runs his hand, held parallel, across his throat. He was laid off without any notice three weeks ago after working for 15 years as a machinist at a supplier for DowDuPoint Inc., the chemical industry giant.

Release Julian Assange, says woman who had two children with him while in embassy

Stella Moris, who had two sons with Wikileaks founder while he was in Ecuadorian embassy, says he is in danger from coronavirus while in prison

The partner of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has revealed that she had two children with him while he was living inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
Stella Moris, 37, a South African-born lawyer, issued a plea for the father of her two young sons, Gabriel, three, and Max, one, to be released from prison and said there were genuine fears for Assange’s health.
Assange was forcibly dragged out of the embassy and arrested in April last year, after Ecuador revoked his political asylum and invited Metropolitan police officers inside their Knightsbridge premises. He had been living at the embassy for nearly seven years.

Coronavirus will trigger ‘staggering and unprecedented’ increase in number of homeless in US, say experts

Without ‘astronomical’ government intervention totals could double

The number of homeless people in the US will see a “staggering and unprecedented” increase because of the coronavirus crisis and its impact on the economy, experts have warned. Some say without an “astronomical” response by the government, the numbers could double.
As more people lose their jobs and are unable to pay their rent – on Friday it was reported almost 17 million people had filed for unemployment benefits in the last three weeks – so pressure will be placed on a sector already at capacity.
The people most likely to join the ranks of the homeless are those who are not part of the digital economy. People of colour are also likely to be disproportionately represented, they said.

Fight over Texas abortion ban during Covid-19 pandemic reaches US Supreme Court

Abortion rights advocates on Saturday called on the US Supreme Court to urgently intervene to force Texas to reinstate the right to abortion, which has been suspended in the state since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
This is the first appeal related to COVID-19 to reach the highest American court, which has been operating only in writing for nearly a month.
The Court, which legalized abortion in 1973 in its landmark Roe v. Wade decision, will have to decide whether a state can suspend the case law in the name of a public health emergency.
This case will be a test for the Supreme Court, which has been profoundly reshaped since the election of President Donald Trump.

Coronavirus: The children struggling to survive India's lockdown

The sudden imposition of a 21-day lockdown in India to stop the spread of the coronavirus has thrown the lives of millions of children into chaos.
Tens of thousands are calling helplines daily while thousands are going to bed hungry as the country shuts down to battle the pandemic.
With 472 million children, India has the largest child population in the world and campaigners say the lockdown has impacted around 40 million children from poor families.
