Israel destroys Gaza tower housing foreign media

Edited by Hugo Bachega

The landlord of the tower block destroyed by an Israel air strike on Saturday has denied there was any military presence in the building, the BBC's Rushdi Abualouf reports from Gaza.

An earlier Israeli statement said the tower had been housing "military assets" belonging to the intelligence offices of Hamas - the militant Islamist group that runs the Gaza Strip.

But the landlord told reporters that the building had only contained the offices of media organisations and other businesses as well as about 60 residential apartments.

Thousands march in Free Palestine rallies in Sydney and Melbourne

Protesters in Australia have joined rallies around the world against Israeli military attacks in Gaza, where fighting continued for a fifth night

Jeanine Hourani has been attending protests calling for freedom for Palestine since she was in a pram.

“I always joke that as Palestinians we learn too much before we learn to walk,” she laughed.

But even still, she said Saturday’s protests were different.

Russian jail builds replica ‘London’, complete with red phone boxes for inmates

The inmates in Siberian penal colony No 8, in the Novosibirsk region, are known for their creativity

A Russian prison has built replica red British phone boxes and a mural of Big Ben, so inmates can stay in touch with their friends and their families.

The Russian prison service Gufsin shared images of red phone boxes which were made by Siberian prisoners and are in fact real. This means that inmates can stay in touch with the outside world as if they were in London.

The phone boxes even have phones with video links, making them somewhat more advanced than their British cousins, which have been left obsolete since the arrival of the smartphone.

'Talkative' dinosaur species found in Mexico

Scientists said the dinosaur had ears that could hear low-frequency sounds. They labeled it a "peaceful but talkative dinosaur."

Paleontologists have identified a new species of dinosaur in northern Mexico after its remains were identified almost 10 years ago. The specimen dates back 73 million years.

The new species, called Tlatolophus galorum, was a crested dinosaur. Paleontologists said that the crest's shape is similar to a "symbol used by Mesoamerican people in ancient manuscripts to represent the action of communication and knowledge itself."

Itamar Ben Gvir, the ultra-nationalist accused of stirring up violence in Jerusalem

Israel's police chief has accused MP Itamar Ben Gvir of adding fuel to the fire in Jerusalem and of being partly responsible for the violent demonstrations that have reignited the fuse of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. FRANCE 24 takes a look at the rise of this ultranationalist whose election to the Knesset in March seems to have boosted the confidence of the Israeli far right.

"The person who is responsible for this Intifada is Itamar Ben Gvir:" Israel's police chief, Kobi Shabtai, did not mince his words during the morning briefing with Benjamin Netanhayu. According to Shabtai, the provocations of the ultra-right MP and his supporters have fanned the flames of Palestinian anger and provoked the violent clashes that shook Jerusalem last week.

Ben Gvir was quick to respond, saying that Shabtai should be fired and accusing the police of not using enough force to control the Arab protests.

India’s Covid catastrophe rooted in Modi’s vanity

Indian leader's administration puts public image above saving lives amid the world's worst-yet Covid-19 outbreak

India has set an unenviable new world record. More than 348,421 new infections were recorded on May 12, and another 4,205 deaths.

The death toll now stands at more than 254,000 people. It is widely thought that these numbers may even be vastly underestimated.

Meanwhile, as the body count continued to rise exponentially, the Modi administration held a workshop on May 5 for hundreds of top officials on “effective communication”, where they were asked to “create a positive image of the government”.
