Hunger in Tigray pushing women and girls into sex work

People in Ethiopian region turn to desperate measures after authorities stop 6 million people accessing their own money

Lucy Kassa

Hunger in the besieged region of Tigray is pushing people to increasingly desperate measures as the authorities are systematically blocking and confiscating remittances needed by millions of people.

Banking services and all communications have been cut off to the state by the Ethiopian administration since last year, with 6 million people denied access to their own money.

In the absence of aid and banking, people had been largely relying on money from family and friends abroad to survive but restrictions have been imposed on remittances by the Tigrayan authorities, and action against smugglers bringing money in has intensified at checkpoints.

Finland’s PM says she has taken drug test as new video shows her dancing with male pop star

She said she has ‘never’ used drugs and that nothing ‘inappropriate’ happened at the nightclub

Finland’s prime minister Sanna Marin has revealed she has taken a drug test, as a new leaked video emerged showing her dancing closely with a male popstar in a nightclub in Helsinki.

Videos have been leaked to the press this week showing the fun-loving politician partying with her friends.

While some have praised her ‘work hard, play hard’ attitude, critics say her partying is irresponsible at a time when tensions with Russia have intensified over her efforts to have Finland join Nato amid Vladimir Putin’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

Ukraine: UN's Guterres in Odesa, warns food crisis not over

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has visited the Ukrainian port of Odesa, where grain exports are moving after a monthslong blockade. He says food insecurity is still a huge issue in developing countries.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Friday that there was "still a long way to go" in resolving the global food crisis sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On a visit to Ukraine's port city of Odesa, where grain exports are flowing after a nearly six-month Russian blockade, he said developing countries now needed financial aid to buy Ukrainian wheat and barley.

World must help low-income countries buy grain

"It is time for massive and generous support so developing countries can purchase the food from this and other ports — and people can buy it," Guterres said.

Nicaraguan police remove bishop from his home: church

Nicaraguan police on Friday forcefully removed Catholic bishop and government critic Rolando Alvarez from his official residence after two weeks under siege, said Church and rights groups who had no news on his whereabouts.

Alvarez, along with several priests and lay people, had been holed up at his residence in Matagalpa in central Nicaragua since August 4, alleged by authorities of inciting violence to destabilize the Central American country.

The incident is the latest in a worsening standoff between civil society and a government accused of growing authoritarianism.

Iran nuclear deal ‘imminent’ with crippling sanctions removed

Sources tell Al Jazeera Arabic an agreement to revive the landmark accord abandoned by the US is soon to be announced.

A European proposal to revive the nuclear agreement between Western countries and Iran is imminent and includes the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds and oil exports in return for the scaling back of its nuclear programme.

The new deal will be carried out in four phases over two 60-day time periods, sources with knowledge of the proposed agreement told Al Jazeera Arabic.

Iran has recently voiced optimism about an agreement on a renewed version of the 2015 nuclear deal with the United States and other foreign powers, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
