Chinese city 'stretched to the limit' as millions wait in line for Covid tests in extreme heat

The Chinese metropolis of Chongqing has rolled out mass Covid testing in its central area amid a record heat wave, leaving millions of residents standing under the sun for hours as they struggle with extreme temperatures and power shortages.

Stringent zero-Covid measures enacted by the southwestern mega city to contain an emerging outbreak are the latest hardship for residents already reeling from a crippling heat wavea severe drought and blazing wildfires.
Chongqing reported 40 Covid-19 infections Wednesday, bringing the total to 146 cases since mid-August.

    The Home Office is planning a new deportation flight to Rwanda, the Guardian has learned.

    Some newly arrived asylum seekers in hotels have received letters from the department telling them their asylum claims are deemed inadmissible for consideration in the UK.

    They go on to say the government intends to send them to Rwanda to have their claims processed there. Asylum seekers have 14 days to raise objections over their forced removal to the east African country.

    The Dec. 16, 2017, article in daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat focused on the activities of the Finnish Intelligence Research Center, a military intelligence agency. The investigative report revealed the rough location and tasks of an intelligence unit of the defense forces.

    Reporters Tuomo Pietilaina and Laura Halmi, and the paper's acting manager at the time, Kalle Silfverberg, have denied wrongdoing.

    Vicky Bowman and her husband, Htein Lin, are reportedly under investigation for immigration law violations after their arrest in Yangon.


    Myanmar’s military authorities have detained the United Kingdom’s former ambassador to the country, and her husband, over alleged violations of immigration law.

    Vicky Bowman, who currently runs the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business (MCRB), and her husband, Htein Lin, a Burmese artist and former political prisoner, were reportedly detained on Wednesday in Yangon, sources told the Reuters and AFP news agencies.


    Putin orders 10% boost in Russian troop numbers


    Russia's president has signed a decree which could see 137,000 service personnel added to the country's armed forces in the coming months.

    Currently Russia has a limit of just over a million military personnel and almost 900,000 civilian staff.

    Vladimir Putin's decree comes amid a recruitment drive around the country, with large cash incentives on offer.

    Western officials say 70-80,000 troops have been killed or wounded since Russia invaded Ukraine six months ago.
