Fighting has erupted between government forces and Tigrayan rebels in northern Ethiopia, shattering a five-month truce between the warring sides.

Both have repeatedly blamed the other for a lack of progress towards negotiations to end the 21-month conflict in Africa’s second most populous nation.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said government forces and their allies had launched a large-scale offensive towards southern Tigray early on Wednesday. The government accused the TPLF of striking first, saying it had “destroyed the truce”.

Russia arrests two Zaporizhzhia nuclear workers ‘for handing information to Ukraine’

Russia accuses staff members of passing information to Ukrainian authorities

Two employees of Ukraine’s Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant have been arrested for passing information to Ukrainian authorities, Russia has said.

The National Guard said it had prevented what it called “illegal actions” that threatened the plant’s security and arrested the two staff members, who it said had transmitted information to Ukrainian armed forces about the location of personnel and equipment on the site.

It said it also detained a third person who had violated the plant’s access procedures.

Can rivers and lakes recover from drought?

Major rivers across Europe are at their lowest levels in years, and climate change will only make things worse for aquatic ecosystems. But allowing nature to take back control can help fix some of the damage.

Europe's intense summer heat waves have brought rivers across the continent to their lowest levels in years.

Major waterways like the Rhine, Danube and Po are warming and at critically low levels, threatening agriculture, commerce, drinking water and natural ecosystems. The European Drought Observatory has reported that nearly 50% of the continent is under a drought warning, with some analysts calling it in the worst in 500 years.

Jamaican farmworkers decry ‘seismic-level exploitation’ in Canada

Temporary foreign workers renew calls for Canada to grant them permanent residency amid fresh abuse allegations.

Jamaican agricultural workers say they face conditions akin to “systematic slavery” on Canadian farms, as they call on Jamaica to address systemic problems in a decades-old, migrant labour programme in Canada.

In a letter sent to Jamaica’s minister of labour and social security earlier this month, workers affiliated with rights group Migrant Workers Alliance for Change (MWAC) said they have been “treated like mules” on two farms in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province.

Passengers describe 'terrifying' evacuation from undersea tunnel

Passengers traveling from France to England were evacuated from a Eurotunnel train underneath the English Channel on Tuesday before being left stranded for hours.
"A train has broken down in the tunnel and we are in the process of transferring customers to a separate passenger shuttle via the service tunnel, to return to our Folkestone terminal," Eurotunnel tweeted late Tuesday UK time. "We apologise sincerely for this inconvenience."
Eurotunnel Le Shuttle runs trains that carry passenger and freight vehicles through a tunnel between England and France.
