Russian army officer admits: 'Our troops tortured Ukrainians'
Allegations of brutal interrogations, where Ukrainian men were shot and threatened with rape, have been made by a former Russian military officer.
Konstantin Yefremov, the most senior officer to speak openly, told the BBC in an exclusive interview Russia now sees him as a traitor and defector.
At one site in southern Ukraine, he said "the interrogations, the torture, continued for about a week".
"Every day, at night, sometimes twice a day."
Mr Yefremov tried to resign from the army numerous times - but he ended up being dismissed for refusing to return to Ukraine. He has now fled Russia.
Afghan refugees settled in London told to uproot families and move 200 miles
Forty families brought to UK after fleeing Taliban given a week to move to West Yorkshire
Rajeev Syal Home affairs editor
Hundreds of Afghan refugees who settled in London after fleeing the Taliban 18 months ago have been told they have a week to uproot and move 200 miles away, the Guardian can reveal.
The Home Office has told 40 families with 150 children who have lived for more than a year in Kensington, west London, that they must leave the capital for another hotel in Wetherby, on the outskirts of Leeds.
Some of the refugees, who include a former Afghan general and former British army translators, say they will refuse to go because their children, already traumatised by war and displacement, will suffer again by being forced to drop out of their schools.
How a German woman allegedly killed her beauty blogger doppelganger to fake her own death
On paper, Shahraban K and Khadidja O would have never been expected to cross paths. But prosecutors say the women were ensnared in a sinister murder plot based solely on their resemblance. Joe Sommerlad reports
When a body was found in the trunk of a young German woman’s car in August 2022, authorities and her family came to the reasonable conclusion that she was dead.
Months later, prosecutors have replaced that reasonable conclusion with an unimaginable tale dubbed the “Doppelganger murder”.
The body initially assumed to be 24-year-old Shahraban K, as it was discovered inside her Mercedes, has now been identified as 23-year-old beauty blogger Khadidja O, according to court documents wherein surnames are withheld.

Turkey summons Western envoys in consulate closure row
Turkey on Thursday summoned the ambassadors and top envoys of nine Western powers to condemn the mass closure of European consulates in Istanbul due to security concerns.
The United States and several European nations have advised citizens not to attend mass events and to avoid tourist hotspots because of a heightened terror threat.
At least seven European countries have temporarily closed their Istanbul consulates to the general public as a precaution.
The US consulate remains open because it is far removed from the city centre and less vulnerable to an attack.
Gautam Adani fails to calm investors as market wipeout hits $100 billion
Shares in Gautam Adani’s businesses plunged further on Thursday after an attempt by the Indian billionaire to reassure panicking investors failed to halt a stock market meltdown that has wiped $100 billion off the value of his conglomerate.
“For me, the interest of my investors is paramount and everything is secondary,” the 60-year-old businessman said in a recorded video address posted after he abruptly abandoned a $2.5 billion deal to sell new shares in his flagship company, Adani Enterprises, just 24 hours after it was sealed.
“Once the market stabilizes, we will review our capital market strategy,” he added
