Yevgeny Prigozhin: Wagner boss 'promised ammunition' after retreat threat

By Matt Murphy
BBC News

Russia's Wagner Group boss says Moscow has agreed to his demands for more ammunition, days after he threatened to withdraw his men from Bakhmut.

On Thursday, Yevgeny Prigozhin attacked his Russian partners in a gruesome, expletive-filled rant, filmed among dozens of Wagner troops' corpses.

The next day he said Wagner fighters would leave Bakhmut by 10 May.

But on Sunday Prigozhin said Moscow had agreed to provide the supplies "needed to continue fighting" in the city.

Prigozhin's apparent U-turn is not a huge surprise. He is a publicity seeker who has not followed through on previous threats.

Calls grow for Pakistan’s zoos to close after death of 17-year-old elephant

Case of Noor Jehan in Karachi draws criticism of conditions and renewed accusations of neglect at country’s facilities

Pakistan’s zoos have faced criticism and calls for their closure after the death of a 17-year-old elephant in Karachi.

Noor Jehan, an African elephant, which have an average lifespan of 60 to 70 years, was already in poor health when she fell into a pond last month and was unable to get up. She later died.

The international animal welfare charity Four Paws said the Karachi zoo was not equipped to take care of elephants, and on a visit last year had advised that Noor Jehan and her companion, Madhubala, needed to be moved to a more species-appropriate home.

If the Russians had taken Kyiv in February 2022, Rambo probably would have been right at the front. He led a reconnaissance team of the Russian special forces at the time, dressed in civilian clothing and armed with a sub-machine gun equipped with a built-in silencer.

He told me this one year later, in March 2023. Rambo has been living in Kazakhstan for the past seven months. He has a physique that justifies his nickname, a full beard and a good reason for keeping his real name secret.

Arab governments vote to readmit Syria into Arab League

Arab League foreign ministers adopted a decision to readmit Syria after more than a decade of suspension on Sunday, a League spokesperson said, consolidating a regional push to normalise ties with President Bashar al-Assad.

The decision said Syria could resume its participation in Arab League meetings immediately, while calling for a resolution of the crisis resulting from Syria’s civil war, including the flight of refugees to neighbouring countries and drug smuggling across the region.

It was taken at a closed meeting of foreign ministers at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo, said Gamal Roshdy, spokesman for the Arab League’s secretary general.

Poland Border Guard says patrol intercepted by Russian jet

The Russian fighter jet "performed aggressive and dangerous maneuvers" toward a Polish aircraft, Warsaw said. The incident over the Black Sea caused Polish pilots to temporarily lose control of their plane.

Poland's border authority said on Sunday that one of its aircraft had been intercepted by a Russian jet which performed dangerous aerial maneuvers in close proximity to its plane.

Poland's Border Guard said one of its planes was conducting patrols over the Black Sea for EU border protection agency Frontex on Friday when the incident took place.
