'All sides must show restraint' says Sunak, as Israel considers Iran response

Recap: Iran has left world more dangerous place - Starmer

Here's a reminder of what Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and other party leaders had to say in response to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's statement in Parliament:

  • Starmer said Iran had "left the world a more dangerous place", and that its attack "must be wholly condemned"
  • He called on Israel to show "strength and courage to de-escalate" and warned diplomatic premises should not be attacked following the strike on Iran's consulate in Iran - widely considered to be by Israel
  • Starmer asked about sanctions on Iran, and called again for aid to Gaza to be "drastically scaled up", an immediate ceasefire and release of Israeli hostages
  • The SNP's Mhairi Black condemned Iran's actions as "a cynical attempt to exploit the suffering, pain and turmoil being experienced" by Palestinians
  • Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said all sides need to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza, to get hostages released and to get aid in

‘It’s death there’: babies and children hit hardest as famine tightens hold on Gaza

Estimated 27 children killed by famine, with fears many more will suffer lifelong effects, despite Israel’s promise of more aid

Even if the war in Gaza ended tomorrow, for some of the Palestinian territory’s children, it would not help. Hunger and malnutrition have already claimed an estimated 27 young lives, and for many more, it may be too late to reverse the excruciating toll that starvation takes on small, growing bodies.

Nuzha Awad’s triplets, Malek, Khader and Moustafa, born two months before the war began when Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, did not stop crying as she spoke to the Guardian. She fled Gaza City when food and formula for her babies began to run out; in their new home, a makeshift tent in the central town of Deir al-Balah, she is still desperately afraid for their futures.

“At this age a child should weigh 8 kilos. They weigh 2 kilos … They don’t have thighs yet. At this stage they are supposed to be crawling and preparing to walk. And now you can see the state they’re in,” she said.

“Are these the arms of an eight-month-old child? … It’s death there, death, death. Death in the literal meaning of the word.”

Devastating floods ravage Kazakhstan and Russia

Tens of thousands of people were displaced following devastating floods after major rivers burst their banks in northern Kazakhstan and Russia.

More than 125,000 people have been displaced by flooding in Russia's southern Ural region and northern Kazakhstan, authorities said on Monday.

Swiftly melting snow swelled several rivers in the region last week, including the Ural, Europe's third-largest river, with authorities saying that water levels had risen by meters in a matter of hours to the highest levels ever recorded.

Authorities said floodwaters continue to rise, posing further threats.

Bollywood films promote hindu nationalism and Modi agenda ahead of election

The glorified biopic on the early 20th-century Hindu nationalist ideologue — called “Swatantra Veer Savarkar,” or “Independent Warrior Savarkar” — hits Indian theatres Friday, just weeks ahead of a national vote that is set to determine the political direction of the country for the next five years. The movie coincides with a cluster of upcoming Bollywood releases based on polarising issues, which either promote Modi and his government’s political agenda, or lambast his critics.

TEPCO begins loading nuclear fuel into idle Niigata reactor

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc started loading nuclear fuel into a reactor on Monday at an idle plant in Niigata Prefecture as part of preparations to potentially restart the facility.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority granted approval earlier in the day for the loading of the No. 7 reactor at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant. However, the timing of the restart remains uncertain.

TEPCO has yet to restart any of its nuclear reactors that were halted after a massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

Birth, death, escape: Three women's struggle through Sudan's war

On April 14, 2023, Yasmine* stepped off the plane and into the arms of her sister in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital.

The Sudanese human rights activist was five months pregnant and living in a nearby country, yet she was happy to be home. She was looking forward to spending some quality time with her parents.

But the next day, her life and her country changed forever.

“I woke up to sounds of very heavy artillery at about 5 or 6am, and it lasted until 7 or 8am,” Yasmine, 31, told Al Jazeera over voice messages from Khartoum, where she still lives.
