German AfD taps into young voters' fears, disillusionment

More and more young Germans support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. It capitalizes on their pessimistic outlook and disappointment with other parties, experts say.

When the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was founded in 2013, it had the reputation of an old man's club: gray hair, suits, professors, businessmen from the baby boomer generation. It seemed to be composed mostly of men dissatisfied with the fiscal and foreign policies of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Eleven years later, hardly any of that political landscape remains. Merkel is no longer chancellor, and the AfD has changed dramatically. It has become more radical, but it has also become much younger. And this became increasingly clear during the European Union and state elections that took place in Germany in 2024.

Exclusive: On the ground in Russian territory held by Ukrainian forces

Ukraine is still holding swathes of territory in the Kursk region of Russia, seven weeks after a lightning offensive designed to draw Russian troops away from eastern Ukraine and gain leverage in potential peace negotiations with Moscow. FRANCE 24’s Catherine Norris Trent was given access to Ukrainian-held areas of Kursk region, embedded with the Ukrainian army and a small number of journalists.

Ukraine has been controlling parts of Russia’s Kursk region since the beginning of August, when its forces mounted a lightning offensive and breached Moscow’s defences in a move that surprised many of Kyiv’s own allies.

Ukrainian officers say some 2,000 Russian civilians remain in the areas they control, while many more have fled. Some locals come to collect food parcels but are largely suspicious or hostile towards the Ukrainian troops.

The procedures for receiving the container were suspended until Israel provides full data with the victims’ names, time of death and the location they were taken from, the ministry said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app on Wednesday.
