Netanyahu derailed a potential Gaza hostage deal in July, Israeli newspaper reports

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in July effectively spiked a draft hostage and ceasefire deal by introducing a raft of new, 11th-hour demands, according to a report by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth citing a document it obtained.

The report lends credence to charges often leveled at the prime minister – most notably by hostage families – of purposefully prolonging the war and torpedoing deals for his political benefit. Far-right members of Netanyahu’s coalition have pledged to bring down the government should he end the war.

Several news outlets, including CNN, have reported on the late July demands made by Netanyahu, but this is the first time the Israeli document has been obtained in full.

At least two loggers have been shot dead with arrows, one has been injured and two more are missing after a confrontation with members of the “uncontacted” Mashco Piro people in the Peruvian Amazon, according to Indigenous activists who have criticised the government for failing to formally recognise and protect all of the isolated people’s territory.

The deadly attack, which occurred last Thursday but was made known only this week, took place a day before the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) suspended for eight months the sustainability certification of a logging company that campaigners have accused of encroaching on the fiercely territorial Indigenous group’s ancestral land.

South Korea: Telegram apologizes for deepfake porn

The messaging platform said there had been a "miscommunication" about the issue. Seoul has vowed to clamp down on a rising tide of online sex crimes.

South Korean media reported on Wednesday that Telegram had apologized, one day after authorities in Seoul ordered an investigation into the messaging app over deepfake pornography.

Telegram called the scandal "unfortunate" and said it was sorry about "miscommunication" regarding the issue, according to Korea's Communications Standards Commission (KCSC).

KCSC said that the platform had removed 25 videos at its request.

Meta clears use of Palestinian slogan 'From the River to the Sea'

Meta's Oversight Board ruled on Wednesday that the standalone use of the phrase "From the River to the Sea," a slogan oft-used by pro-Palestinian users, does not violate the company's content policies.

The phrase "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," has been used as a rallying cry for many since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, with Israel accusing those who use it of "anti-Semitism."

The independent Meta board is the top authority in Meta's content moderation decisions. It reviewed three cases involving Facebook posts containing the controversial phrase, which has gained prominence due to the conflict and the worldwide protests against it.

Venezuelan forces accused of ‘brutal’ repression in post-election protests

Human Rights Watch says security forces and pro-government armed groups killed 23 protesters following Maduro’s victory.

Venezuela’s security forces and pro-government armed groups committed widespread abuses following the disputed presidential election in July, an international rights group has said.

The national guard, police force and armed groups known as “colectivos” killed 23 protesters during protests in the aftermath of the July 28 election, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report on the post-election crackdown on Wednesday.

Grenfell's 'path to disaster' that led to 72 deaths

Tom Symonds

Correspondent, BBC News

The Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people in 2017 was the result of a chain of failures by governments, "dishonest" companies and a lack of strategy by the fire service, the final report of the six-year public inquiry has concluded.

The damning report sets out a "path to disaster" at Grenfell stretching back to the early 1990s over how fire safety in high-rise buildings has been managed and regulated.

The coalition and Conservative governments “ignored, delayed or disregarded” concerns about the safety of industry practices, the inquiry said.

The report highlighted the "systematic dishonesty" of manufacturers as a reason for the tower block being clad in combustible materials.
