Trump ally Gaetz paid for sex and drugs while in office, draft ethics report says

Gaetz faces allegations of 'illicit drug use'

  • report by the House Ethics Committee accused former Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, of regularly paying for sex, using illegal drugs and having sexual relations with a 17-year-old girl. The report concluded that the actions by Mr. Gaetz — President-elect Donald J. Trump’s former pick for attorney general — violated state sexual misconduct laws, including Florida’s statutory rape law, and violated House rules. But the committee said it did not find conclusive evidence that he violated federal sex trafficking laws. Read more ›

Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz also faces the allegation that he used and purchased illegal drugs - including from his Capitol Hill office, according to the final draft of 37-page report which CBS News, the BBC's news US partner, has obtained.

CBS News says the draft report states: “The Committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress.”

The document, which is yet to be released, also reportedly details allegations of sex and drug-fuelled parties and travel, including a 2018 trip to the Bahamas.

Sweden says China denied request for prosecutors to board ship linked to severed cables

Foreign minister says China denied request for prosecutor to investigate onboard Yi Peng 3, which sailed over cables

Sweden has accused China of denying a request for Swedish prosecutors to board a Chinese ship that has been linked to the cutting of two undersea cables in the Baltic despite Beijing pledging “cooperation” with regional authorities.

The Yi Peng 3 left the waters it had been anchored in since last month on Saturday – despite an ongoing investigation.

The ship was tracked sailing over the two fibre-optic cables, one between Sweden and Lithuania, and the other linking Helsinki and Germany, at around the time that they were cut on 17 and 18 November in Swedish territorial waters close to the Swedish islands of Gotland and Öland.

Hospital siege part of Israeli strategy to ethnically cleanse northern Gaza: UK doctor

As we’ve been reporting, the Israeli military has ordered the emptying and closure of Kamal Adwan Hospital in besieged northern Gaza.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, a British emergency physician who has worked on medical missions to Gaza said it is not possible to comply with such an order to fully force out the hundreds of people inside the last partially functioning hospital in the area.

“There are about 90 to 100 patients still in the hospital, including babies in incubators. There are about 400 civilians and 150 healthcare workers. The surrounding area is incredibly dangerous. In the past 24 hours, there’s been continued bombardment and sniper fire into the hospital,” James Smith told Al Jazeera.
