General killed in Moscow a legitimate target, says Ukraine

A high-ranking general in the Russian armed forces and his assistant have been killed in Moscow by Ukraine's security service, a Ukrainian source has told the BBC.


Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, head of the Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defence Forces (NBC), was outside a residential block early on Tuesday when a device hidden in a scooter was detonated remotely, Russia's Investigative Committee (SK) said.


A source in Ukraine's SBU security service claimed Kirillov was "a legitimate target" and alleging he had carried out war crimes.

A young Black woman who was subjected to racist abuse after being selected to lead celebrations of a Swedish festival of light in Helsinki has received an apology from the Finnish prime minister.

According to the Swedish tradition, each year a young woman or girl is chosen to represent Saint Lucia by dressing in a costume of a white gown, red waistband and crown of candles as part of the official annual festivities in Finland at the Lutheran Cathedral on 13 December to mark the shortest day according to the Julian calendar.


Sri Lanka walks a tightrope between India and China

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is embarking on his first overseas visit to India, navigating a complex geopolitical landscape shaped by China's growing influence.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Monday to bolster ties between the neighboring countries.

Dissanayake said India's economic support is critical in realizing his vision of a prosperous Sri Lanka, as the island nation emerges from the worst economic crisis in its independent history.

"Our conversations focused on strengthening Indo-Sri Lanka economic cooperation, enhancing investment opportunities, fostering regional security, and advancing key sectors such as tourism and energy," Dissanayake, who is popularly known as AKD, said in a statement.

France imposes nighttime curfew on cyclone-hit Mayotte in bid to prevent looting

Mayotte will be placed under curfew from Tuesday evening as authorities seek to re-establish order in the French overseas territory in the aftermath of the deadly Cyclone Chido. The annoucement comes as rescuers continue to search for survivors in a race against the clock as the death toll climbs to 21 with more than 1,400 injured.   

France from Tuesday evening will impose a nighttime curfew on the Indian Ocean island of Mayotte, after the French overseas territory was devastated by a cyclone feared to have killed hundreds, the interior ministry said.

According to the latest official toll, 21 people are confirmed to have been killed by Cyclone Chido when it barrelled into the island and its surrounding archipelago on Sunday.

But authorities fear that hundreds, and possibly even thousands, were killed with the the true scale of the toll only set to be clear in the next days when rubble is cleared and roads unblocked.
