UK's Gujarati community likely to be hit hard by this tragedy
Senior UK correspondent
I've been speaking to people connected to those who were onboard the flight.
The news - understandably – hasn't sunk in for several of their loved ones.
One man sobbed down the phone as he told me how his cousin had been coming to London for a celebration.
Another explained how the vivid images on television were causing them more heartbreak as they tried to find out what exactly went wrong with the flight.

US-Israel logistics group claims workers were attacked by Hamas, while Israeli forces kill 22 people across the territory
The bloody chaos that has overtaken food distribution in Gaza has worsened with more mass casualties among Palestinians trying to reach humanitarian assistance, while the US-Israeli organisation tasked with deliveries claimed that five of its local workers had been killed by Hamas.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) said on Thursday that a bus full of its Palestinian staff was attacked by Hamas at 10pm local time on Wednesday, with at least five deaths and other workers taken hostage.
It was not immediately clear why the organisation was attempting a night-time delivery. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have warned Palestinians not to approach food distribution points before 6am. The GHF reportedly claimed on its Arabic Facebook page that it had carried out a 3am food distribution.
Kenya police clash with protesters over blogger's death
Protesters were angered after an autopsy and President William Ruto contradicted police claims over the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in custody.
Kenyan police fired tear gas on Thursday to disperse protesters in Nairobi, angered over the death of a blogger in police custody.
The demonstrations, which turned violent with reports of vehicles being set on fire, erupted a day after President William Ruto acknowledged that the blogger, Albert Ojwang, had died "at the hands of the police."
Ojwang was arrested last week in western Kenya for allegedly defaming the country's deputy police chief, Eliud Lagat.
Police initially claimed he died "after hitting his head against a cell wall."
Syria returns offer 'ray of hope' as wars displace 122 million people worldwide
The number of people displaced by war and persecution around the world remained "untenably high" at above 122 million this year due to longstanding conflicts such as those in Sudan and Ukraine, the UN refugee agency said on Thursday, though the return of almost two million Syrians displaced by the country's civil war offered "rays of hope".
The number of people forcibly displaced from their homes worldwide has dropped slightly from a record high but remains "untenably high", the United Nations said Thursday.
A record 123.2 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced from their homes at the end of 2024, said UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.
But that figure dropped to 122.1 million by the end of April this year, as Syrians began returning home after years of turmoil.

Japan again ranked 118th out of 148 countries in terms of gender equality—the lowest among Group of Seven nations—according to the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s Global Gender Gap Report 2025.
The report, released June 12, ranks countries from most equal (highest) to least equal (lowest) by analyzing gender equality in four areas: education, health, politics and the economy.
The report indicates that worldwide progress has been slow, with global gender equality more than a century away at the current pace, and that accelerated efforts are needed.
