Russia-Ukraine war live: 3 people killed in Kyiv, Odesa in Russian attacks

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia launched 315 drones and seven missiles overnight on his country, calling on the United States to exercise its “power to force Russia into peace”.
  • The war-torn country’s air force says the main target of the attack was the capital, Kyiv, adding that 284 drones and all the missiles were intercepted.
  • At least two people were killed and several others injured in a drone attack on the southern port city of Odesa, according to Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov.
  • In Russia, officials say all airports serving Moscow and St Petersburg were temporarily shut down due to Ukraine’s overnight drone attacks that did not cause any damage.

Russia, Ukraine conduct prisoner swap

The Russian Defense Ministry has announced the second prisoner swap with Ukraine following yesterday’s exchange of POWs under the age of 25.

“On June 10, in accordance with the Russian-Ukrainian agreements reached on June 2 in Istanbul, the second group of Russian servicemen was returned from the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime,” the ministry said in a statement.

“In exchange, a group of prisoners of war of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was transferred.”

The UK has been joined by Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway in placing sanctions on two Israeli government ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, over their “monstrous” comments about Gaza, including plans to destroy the territory and use violence to gain control of new settlements in the West Bank.

Ben-Gvir, the security minister in Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government, and Smotrich, the finance minister, will face travel bans and have their assets frozen.

Extreme weather events like floods, heatwaves and cyclones are happening more frequently in India, with widespread negative impacts on health, development, and the economy.

Greta Thunberg tells FRANCE 24 she was 'kidnapped' by Israel

Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg on Tuesday told FRANCE 24 she was "kidnapped" in international waters by Israel, after the Israeli navy prevented her and a group of fellow pro-Palestinian activists from sailing to Gaza. Thunberg spoke to journalists at a Paris airport after being deported from Israel.

Greta Thunberg on Tuesday accused Israel of kidnapping her and her fellow pro-Palestinian activists in international waters, saying she declined to sign a document stating she entered the country illegally prior to being deported.

Speaking to media outlets including FRANCE 24 at the arrivals section of Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport after being deported from Israel, the Swedish activist said she and her team had broken no laws, and called for the immediate release of the activists still in Israel.

Gunman opens fire in Austrian school, killing nine and throwing country into shock


A shooter opened fire at a high school in the Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday, killing nine people, including teenagers, in one of the worst rampages in the country’s history.
Austrian police confirmed the fatalities, raising the death toll from an earlier figure of eight. The country’s interior ministry told CNN that the victims included children between 14 and 18 years old.
Interior minister Gerhard Karner said at a news conference that of the nine victims, six were female and three were male. Twelve students were injured in the incident, some of them seriously, Karner added.

In China, they call it the Seagull, and it has looks to match. It is sleek and angular, with bright, downward-slanting headlights that have more than a hint of mischievous eyes about them.

It is, of course, a car. A very small one, designed as a cheap city runabout – but it could have huge significance. Available in China since 2023, where it has proved extremely popular, it has just been launched in Europe with the name Dolphin Surf (because Europeans apparently aren't as keen on seagulls as Chinese people).
