Syria declares ceasefire in Druze-majority Sweida city after sectarian violence
Syria’s defence minister declared a ceasefire Tuesday after government troops entered the southern city of Sweida in an effort to quell deadly clashes between Bedouin tribes and Druze armed groups that have killed nearly 100 people, according to the interior ministry. Israel later said it carried out strikes against government forces in Sweida for a second consecutive day, saying it was acting to protect the Druze minority.

The announcement came a day after sectarian clashes that killed scores, and after a state-run news agency report that Israel had launched a strike in the area.

THE ASAHI SHIMBUN
July 15, 2025 at 15:44 JST
The ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito will likely lose its majority in the July 20 Upper House election, an Asahi Shimbun survey showed.
The LDP is expected to win about 34 seats and Komeito about nine, including proportional representation seats, according to the survey.
Those seats, combined with the parties’ 75 seats not up for re-election, would give the coalition 118, short of the minimum 125 needed to maintain its majority in the 248-seat Diet chamber.
