People took to the streets of Greenland and Denmark on Saturday as part of the "Hands off Greenland" rallies that have been organised in protest of Donald Trump's insistence that the US should control the self-governing island

US discussing options to acquire Greenland, including use of military, says White House

 US President Donald Trump has been discussing "a range of options" to acquire Greenland, including use of the military, the White House said.

In a statement, the White House told the BBC that acquiring Greenland was a "national security priority".

It comes after Trump repeated over the weekend that the US "needed" Greenland – a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark – for security reasons.

The 19th century has returned in the guise of Donald Trump as during that time empire building and stealing a country's natural resources was seen as a projection of political, military and economic strength.  In every case the affected countries and territories citizenry paid the real price though loss of rights under the rule of their colonizers. Even today mismanagement by the invading powers continues to have negatives effects. Additionally if America were to use its military power to take Greenland they'd be at war with NATO. Which was founded by America following World War II.

About 8,000 North Korean soldiers are stationed in Russia on the border with Ukraine, the US secretary of state has said, warning that Moscow is preparing to deploy those troops into combat “in the coming days”.

Antony Blinken said the US believed that North Korea had sent 10,000 troops to Russia in total, deploying them first to training bases in the far east before sending the vast majority to the Kursk region on the border with Ukraine.

Blinken told a press conference that the North Korean troops had received Russian training in “artillery, UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles], basic infantry operations, including trench clearing, indicating that they fully intend to use these forces in frontline operations”.

Its this kind of escalation that could lead to a wider war not only in Europe, but on the Korean peninsula. Think what will happen when the first North Korean soldiers are killed in Ukraine. Will Kim-Jong un respond with bombastic rhetoric or will he order a military response with an attack on South Korean and US forces. As for Europe, there will be foreign troops fighting there for the first time since the Second World. If those Korean troops accidentally cross into a NATO and country engage their forces that would be cause for real alarm.      

With tensions this high any mistake could be catastrophic  leading to unintended consequences.

RAF jets intercept Russian military aircraft during Baltic mission

 

The RAF has released footage and photographs of fighter jets from RAF Lossiemouth intercepting Russian aircraft.

Air force crews were deployed to Estonia to help patrol Nato airspace over the course of four months, during which they intercepted 50 Russian aircraft.

The RAF personnel used "zombie" as their codeword for a Russian plane acting suspiciously.

The mission, called Operation Azotie, came amid heightened tensions between Nato-member countries and Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine deploy drone warfare

Ukraine and Russia are once again claiming to have destroyed each others drones. Kyiv says it downed 15 Russian drones on Wednesday night, while Moscow says it shot down six Ukrainian ones over Russia. The attacks come after Russia targeted the port of Izmail on Wednesday. The strikes hit grain facilities in the city, across the Danube River from Romania, which is a member of NATO. Falling debris from destroyed Russian drones also damaged a building in Kyiv. Earlier this week, Russia said it destroyed Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow. It also claimed to have taken out a naval drone attacking a Russian warship in the Black Sea.

Poland's military is redeploying more units closer to its border with Belarus. That's after reports of Russia's Wagner mercenary group training Belarusian soldiers in the area. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the multilateral accord, which paves the way for bilateral negotiations with countries, was a "significant security victory" for Ukraine, even as he expressed disappointment over the lack of a clear path for his country to join NATO. "Today there are security guarantees for Ukraine on the way to NATO," he said. "The Ukraine delegation is bringing home the significant security victory."

Putin confirms transfer of nuclear warheads to Belarus

Speaking at an economic forum in St. Petersburg on Friday, Putin said the move was meant as a deterrent to "those who are thinking of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia."
