Shrinking fish stocks raise tensions in the South China Sea

In the disputed South China Sea, fishermen are being driven further from their shores due to dwindling catches, forcing them to encroach into territorial waters belonging to neighbouring countries.
Tensions have risen as China claims 80 percent of the South China Sea and has sent out the world’s biggest naval force to defend its territory.

Bluefin Tuna (Maguro) Story | Sea to Sushi Shop
Japan's most prized bluefin tuna comes from a town called Ōma where a HON-MAGURO auctioned in Tsukiji once fetched $1.4M (2003). Oma Maguro is a brand. Just the location it's caught increases the price of the tuna by as much as 20%! India and Sri Lanka's violent fight over fish
Fishing is the economic lifeline for villages in northern Sri Lanka. But after a decades long civil war, fishermen returned to find their fish stocks depleted – and they pointed the finger squarely at neighboring India. As Indian fishermen developed methods to increase hauls, and crossed a maritime border that was more permeable during the war, they depleted the fish stock for both sides.
