Only partial examination of material seized from a Brazilian man held at Heathrow airport under anti-terror laws can take place, judges have ruled.
David Miranda, the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, has been granted a limited injunction at the High Court.
It prevents the government and police "inspecting, copying or sharing" data seized from him, except for the purposes of national security.
The law under which Mr. Miranda was stopped and questioned was intended for those accused of or having known ties to terrorism. It was intended for intimidation of journalists.
