The newspaper that broke the biggest political scandal in American history (Watergate) which led to the resignation of a president has been sold to the founder of Amazon.
Soon after the sale Mr. Bezos will announce that the paper will now be published in an unheated warehouse in a state which has no unions and the only version available will be on the Kindle Fire.
Amazon’s billionaire founder, Jeff Bezos, has announced a move into the newspaper business, buying The Washington Post and a clutch of other publishing assets for $250m (£163 m) in cash.
The publisher, The Washington Post Company, announced the surprise deal tonight. Bezos is buying the paper and other print properties as an individual.
Washington Post Chairman and Chief Executive Donald Graham, whose family owns the paper, said it would be better served with another owner.
"I, along with Katharine Weymouth and our board of directors, decided to sell only after years of familiar newspaper-industry challenges made us wonder if there might be another owner who would be better for the Post," Graham said.
Soon after the sale Mr. Bezos will announce that the paper will now be published in an unheated warehouse in a state which has no unions and the only version available will be on the Kindle Fire.
