Israel and militants trade fresh fire as Gaza toll rises

Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip have continued to trade fire overnight after Israel vowed to press on with its offensive to stop rocket fire.
Some 121 Palestinians have been killed, Palestinian sources say. The UN says more than three-quarters are civilians.
Israel says it hit more than "60 terror targets" in new raids. Two rockets hit Beersheba in Israel, the military said.
Hundreds of missiles and rockets have been fired since Israel began its operation five days ago.
Israel says it is targeting militants and militant facilities, including the homes of senior operatives. It says "dozens of terrorists" are among those killed.

Seattle's first marijuana shop closes after running out of stock in three days

Producers struggle to meet demand after Washington becomes second US state to allow recreational pot sales to adults

Seattle's first and only recreational marijuana store had to close on Friday after running out of stock in just three days after Washington became the second US state to allow pot sales to adults.
Cannabis City opened in Seattle on Tuesday with at least 4.5kg (10 pounds) of marijuana for sale, and by close of business on Thursday it was all gone. A message on the store's phone line said it would re-open on 21 July.
There were widespread concerns that shortages of pot would afflict retailers this week after the state issued its first 25 licences to outlets, under a heavily regulated and taxed system approved by voters inNovember 2012.
Some business owners planned to limit the amount of marijuana early customers could buy to try to make stocks last.

China's top paper says no place for a 'new cold war' with U.S.

SHANGHAI Sat Jul 12, 2014 3:00am EDT

(Reuters) - China and the United States must avoid a "new cold war" in their international relations, China's top newspaper said on Saturday, in the wake of high level talks in Beijing between senior leaders of the world's two largest economies.
China and the United States agreed on Thursday to boost military ties and counter-terrorism cooperation during annual talks in Beijing, but there was little immediate sign of progress on thorny cyber-security or maritime issues.

"Both China and the United States realize that today's world has already undergone profound changes, and there is no longer a market for a "new cold war", the People's Daily, the ruling communist party's official paper, said in a commentary.

Favela life: ‘See nothing and say nothing. It’s how you stay alive’

A Rio favela resident tells how the global media has not found the ‘real Brazil’ during the World Cup

Maria Rodrigues

Journalists are getting ready to go home, after the frenzy of uncovering the “real Brazil”. Favelas all over Brazil have been invaded by camera crews hoping to uncover the “reality” within these meandering alleyways we call home. Visiting a favela seems exotic and edgy, and toothy smiles mask the fear something sordid might unfold.
But, the real truth doesn’t make the final edit. You see, favelados obey the “law of silence”, an ingrained and automatic defence. You see nothing, you hear nothing, and you say nothing. The law of silence even penetrates my home. Someone could be shot dead next to my son, but he will tell me he saw nothing. He’ll believe it too. It’s better that way. It’s how you stay alive.
I wasn’t born in a favela; maybe that’s why I see things as I do. I moved from one type of poverty in the state where I was born, to a completely other type here in Rio de Janeiro. After decades of cleaning the homes of the rich (starting when I was eight), life brought me to raise my sons in this surreal place.

Guinea to host regional Ebola response centre

AFP | 11 July, 2014 14:44

A regional centre is being set up in Guinea to coordinate the response to the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola that has killed hundreds of people in West Africa, the World Health Organisation said.

The haemorrhagic fever sweeping through Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone has left an estimated 539 people dead, according to the latest WHO figures.
Tracking and treating the disease has been a challenge as rural populations are often highly mistrustful of foreign doctors and don't follow their advice.
Traditional practices which include touching the bodies at their funerals have also contributed to the spread of the virus.

Deaths in Ukraine as Russia shuts border

At least 23 troops killed in pre-dawn missile barrage from rebels at Zelenopole border post near Luhansk, Ukraine says.

Pro-Russia rebels have fired missiles at government troops near the Russian border, killing at least 23 soldiers, Ukraine's Defence Ministry says.
President Petro Poroshenko summoned security officials in Kiev to discuss Friday's pre-dawn attack at the Zelenopole border post near Luhansk, and declared that the perpetrators would be punished.
"For every life of our soldiers, the militants will pay with tens and hundreds of their own. Not one terrorist will evade responsibility, everybody will get what is coming to them," he said.
