Boris Johnson gives green light for Huawei 5G infrastructure role

Chinese firm designated ‘high-risk vendor’ but will be allowed to build non-core elements of UK’s 5G network

Huawei decision: political reaction - live

The Chinese tech firm Huawei has been designated a “high-risk vendor” but will be given the opportunity to build non-core elements of Britain’s 5G network, the government has announced.
The company will be banned from the “core”, of the 5G network, and from operating at sensitive sites such as nuclear and military facilities, and its share of the market will be capped at 35%.
“We are clear-eyed about the challenge posed by Huawei, which we today confirm is a high-risk vendor,” said a Whitehall source.

Turkey targets critics after deadly earthquake

In the wake of Turkey's deadly earthquake, experts have said they explicitly told the government it must act to prevent deaths but were rebuffed. Now, Ankara is going after those who criticized its disaster response.

Naci Gorur had warned them all. The 72-year-old, who is originally from Turkey's eastern Elazig province, and who works as a geologist at Istanbul Technical University, had spent the past months telling Turkish authorities and people in Elazig that a severe earthquake was imminent. He went on television and attended numerous public events, warning everyone of this danger, including Elazig's regional authority and the army. He even traveled to the eastern province, urging locals to prepare their homes to withstand tremors. In October last year, he went on CNN Turk, saying that the city of Sivrice, in Elazig province, could become the epicenter of a severe earthquake. And he was proven right.

Trump to unveil Middle East peace plan despite accusations of pro-Israel bias

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday will ignore accusations, led by the Palestinians themselves, of pro-Israel bias and unveil what he says is a peace plan capable of solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Long held secret, the plan will finally be aired jointly by Trump and visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

Given that it has been rejected by the Palestinians, the latest of many US proposals to address the bitter, multi-generational Mideast conflict might seem to have little future.
But Trump insists he is optimistic and whatever happens, both he and Netanyahu could reap political benefits as they battle respective domestic scandals.

The controversy over a Washington Post reporter’s Kobe Bryant tweets, explained

The controversy over bringing up the rape allegation against Kobe Bryant after his death highlights the difficulty of remembering complex figures.

The Washington Post has suspended a reporter who posted a series of tweets about the 2003 rape allegation against basketball star Kobe Bryant after his death on Sunday. The incident has stirred up controversy over how we remember complicated public figures, even as circumstances around the suspension remain unclear.
Bryant, 41, and one of his daughters, 13-year-old Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant, were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday morning. News of the crash prompted an outpouring of emotion across the country and the world, but it was also met with reminders of a darker part of Bryant’s past: namely, the rape case brought against him more than 15 years ago. Felicia Sonmez, a reporter at the Washington Post, was one of many people to bring up the incident.

Jeffrey Epstein accusers outraged by Prince Andrew's 'lack of co-operation'

Lawyers representing alleged victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have urged Prince Andrew to co-operate with an inquiry into the financier.
Lisa Bloom said Epstein's accusers were "outraged" by the Duke of York not assisting the US authorities.
It comes after the prosecutor in charge of the US investigation said the duke had provided "zero co-operation".
The duke has said he did not witness or suspect any suspicious behaviour during visits to Epstein's homes.
