White House attacks Fauci as states see record new coronavirus cases – live updates

The president says the scientist leading the US fight against the virus has ‘made a lot of mistakes’

He is the US scientist who became the figurehead of attempts to combat the country’s coronavirus epidemic, described in some quarters as “America’s doctor”.
Now Anthony Fauci appears sidelined by Donald Trump’s White House after repeatedly contradicting the president’s view about the effectiveness of the government response.
In recent days the 79-year-old director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has come under increasing fire from the president and his proxies. Trump told Fox news interviewers that Fauci had “made a lot of mistakes” and said he “disagreed” with Fauci’s claim that the US was in a bad place in its coronavirus response.

'This is a war': the coronavirus disaster in California's hardest-hit – and poorest – county

About 17 patients are airlifted out of Imperial county every day, as the virus takes a devastating toll on Latino residents

In southern California’s Imperial county, the chuff-chuff of spinning helicopter blades has become a familiar noise.

It’s the sound of coronavirus patients being airlifted out – 15 to 17 a day, on average. This remote region along the US-Mexico border is under siege from Covid-19, and hospitals are stretched to the brink.
Imperial county, population 181,000, is experiencing California’s worst outbreak, according to several public health metrics.

China and Iran draw up military and trade partnership in defiance of Trump administration

US sanctions could lose their bite as Beijing  backs Tehran

Iran and China have quietly drafted a sweeping economic and security partnership that would clear the way for billions of dollars of Chinese investments in energy and other sectors, undercutting the Trump administration’s efforts to isolate the Iranian government because of its nuclear and military ambitions.
The partnership, detailed in an 18-page proposed agreement, would vastly expand Chinese presence in banking, telecommunications, ports, railways and dozens of other projects.
In exchange, China would receive a regular — and, according to an Iranian official and an oil trader, heavily discounted — supply of Iranian oil over the next 25 years.
Italian fashion, Chinese labour

Prato’s migrant workforce

‘Made in Italy’ sells clothes, but in the Tuscan city of Prato many garments bearing that label are now produced by Chinese entrepreneurs and a migrant workforce. And if they become too expensive, new arrivals from Pakistan and Africa are willing to work for even less.

Chinese media were delighted when Matteo Biffoni, the mayor of Prato, Tuscany, praised its Chinese community. ‘When the epidemic broke out in China, [Italian] newspapers and television channels predicted Prato would be Italy’s blackspot. But in fact we’ve had an infection rate well below the rest of the country, and no Chinese citizens infected. The Chinese community has been extraordinarily careful,’ he told China Central Television (CCTV) on 7 April. He said to the Xinhua News Agency, ‘Many Chinese who live in Prato returned to China for Chinese New Year [25 January]. When they came back here, they quarantined themselves voluntarily. They deserve our thanks.’ Italy’s Chinese immigrants are not used to such praise.

Poland's Andrzej Duda wins 2nd term by narrow majority

Polish President Andrzej Duda has won the country's presidential election, the country's National Electoral Commission has said. The right-wing politician will lead Poland for five more years.
Poland's incumbent candidate Andrzej Duda won the country's presidential election, Poland's National Electoral Commission said Monday, securing a second five-year term for the right-wing populist president.
With results in from over 99% of polling stations, and remaining uncounted votes unlikely to change the outcome, Duda won 51.21% of the vote, the commission said.
Opposition candidate Rafal Trzaskowski received 48.79%.

Christian Kabasele says racism online 'is worse' than incidents in stadium

By Ben Church, Darren Lewis and Zayn Nabbi, CNN

It was a moment that shocked European football. Christian Kabasele, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, scored for Genk against Standard Liege in October 2015 and celebrated with a monkey imitation.
His celebration was in protest of the monkey chants he'd been subjected to by some Kortrijk fans in September 2015 in another Belgium Pro League game.
The Belgium Pro League did not immediately respond to CNN Sport's request for comment, though the Royal Belgium Football Association pointed to projects that it has introduced to combat racism earlier this year.
