In Nepal, a situation is unfolding that looks chillingly familiar.

Covid-19 cases are skyrocketing, hospitals are overwhelmed, and the country's Prime Minister is pleading for help from other nations.
Nepal is now reporting about 20 daily Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people -- about the same number as India was reporting two weeks ago.

The international criminal court has sentenced a former militia leader and child soldier from Uganda to 25 years in prison after he was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity in a landmark judgment.

The presiding judge, Bertram Schmitt, said the panel of judges had considered sentencing Dominic Ongwen to life imprisonment, the court’s harshest punishment, but had sided against it due to the defendant’s own personal suffering.

Ongwen was convicted in February on charges of murder, rape, sexual slavery, abduction and torture committed as a commander in the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a violent cult which waged a bloody campaign in Uganda and neighbouring countries from the mid-1980s until only a few years ago.

Russia still poised to attack Ukraine, claims US top diplomat

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, on a visit to Kiev, said a military threat to Ukraine from Moscow remained

America’s top diplomat has warned Russia remained poised for an offensive attack on Ukraine — with a widely reported withdrawal only affecting a small percentage of the reported 80,000 troops amassed on the border.

"In terms of the threat, it remains," Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a press conference in Kiev on Thursday. "Russia has the capacity on fairly short notice to take aggressive action if it so chooses."

The first senior Biden administration official to visit Ukraine, Mr. Blinken said he had travelled to offer support for Ukraine as it manages a serious uptick in its seven year undeclared conflict with its eastern neighbour.

Access to COVID vaccine patents is not the same as access to vaccines

The US has backed India and South Africa's bid to temporarily lift patent protection for COVID-19 vaccines. The support for an IP waiver by the WTO has left pharma companies dismayed and health activists asking for more.

US President Joe Biden has thrown his support behind efforts by India, South Africa and dozens of other countries to temporarily suspend intellectual property (IP) protections for coronavirus vaccines, offering hope for countries struggling for doses and leaving vaccine makers exasperated.

The reversal of the previous US position comes as a deadly second wave of the coronavirus sweeps through India, leaving tens of thousands dead and many more infected over the past few weeks. The virus has overwhelmed the country's already dilapidated health care system with patients struggling for hospital beds and medical oxygen.

Malawi orders thousands of refugees to return to overcrowded camp

Despite years of integration, the government claims refugees could pose a threat to national security by living with locals.

The Malawian government has ordered thousands of long-integrated refugees to return to its sole but badly overcrowded refugee camp, in a controversial move that many have vowed to resist.

The UN estimates there are around 2,000 refugees residing outside the camp at Dzaleka, about 40 kilometres (30 miles) north of the capital Lilongwe.

Many have lived there for years, setting up businesses in the town or marrying Malawians and having children with them.
