Maia and Rina Dee: Funerals of sisters killed in occupied West Bank taking place
The father of two British-Israeli sisters killed in a shooting in the occupied West Bank embraced their bodies while mourners sang songs of grief at their funeral on Sunday.
Maia and Rina Dee, 20 and 15, were killed on Friday when suspected Palestinian gunmen opened fire on them in their car in the Jordan Valley.
Their mother, Leah, is in a critical condition following surgery.
The attack came amid soaring Israeli-Palestinian tensions and violence.
The low rhythmic songs swelled and swayed with the crowd, who were packed beneath the white rafters in the prayer hall at a cemetery in the settlement of Kfar Etzion.
China sends dozens of warplanes towards Taiwan as US urges restraint amid military drills
Show of force comes after Taiwanese president Tsai met US House speaker McCarthy this week, despite Beijing warning against it
China sent dozens of warplanes towards Taiwan for a second day of military drills on Sunday, launching simulated attacks in retaliation to the island’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, meeting the US House Speaker during a brief visit to the US.
Taiwan’s defence ministry said it was monitoring the movements of China’s missile forces, as the US said it too was on alert.
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) sent 70 war planes, including fighter jets, reconnaissance planes, and refuellers, into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone on Sunday morning, according to Taiwan’s defence ministry. It did not provide a map or locations, but said 31 planes had crossed the median line – the de facto border in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China.
Building collapse in southern French city of Marseille, injuring at least five
The collapse of a four-storey residential building in Marseille on Sunday left at least five people from surrounding structures injured, but a fire was preventing rescue workers in their search for victims, officials said.
The collapse of the building in the port city in southern France occurred around 12:40 am (2240 GMT), Marseille mayor Benoit Payan told reporters. One neighbouring building collapsed later on Sunday morning.
So far, five people were injured from two residences next to the collapsed building in the central La Plaine district, Payan said, but the fire in the rubble was "ongoing".
The fire is "extremely difficult to control [...] The firefighters are judging minute by minute how best to put out this fire because there are potentially people alive inside," Payan said. "We have to be prepared to have victims in this terrible tragedy."
Ethiopia After the Civil WarA Fragile Peace in the Wake of Unspeakable Horrors

He still remembers the stench of death. The sweetish smell that seeps into clothes and sticks in your nose. Priest Abreha Weldensea cannot forget how people here in his valley in southern Tigray would wear rags in front of their faces to block the smell, but still couldn’t escape the stench as they hacked graves into the hard ground with pickaxes.
Abreha has just finished his morning prayers in the church on the hill and is now wandering back down the path to his village, Adi Isher. A valley spreads out to his right, a shimmer of downy light green covering the earth. "This is where they always come back to me, the images of the dead,” he says. The memories of the two battles that took place in this valley in 2021 between the armies of the Tigray and the Ethiopians. Of the thousands of people who had to be buried.China continues second day of military drills around Taiwan
Military drills involving Chinese forces are continuing for a second day, with air force sorties. The move comes right after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen returned from her visit to the US.
China continued military drills around Taiwan for a second day on Sunday as the US said it was keeping an eye on events.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said it had detected nine Chinese warships and 58 aircraft around the island, until 12 pm local time (0400 GMT). The ministry said that along with the warships, there was a mix of fighter jets and bombers.
"Regarding the movements of the Chinese communists' Rocket Force, the nation's military also has a close grasp through the joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance system, and air defense forces remain on high alert," the ministry said.
Elderly Ukrainians and their pets stay put in the abandoned east
“God protects me,” says 73-year-old Tamara. She’s one of the few people who have stayed in the town of Konstantinivka, eastern Ukraine.
“If there is a need, God will save me. If not,” she adds with a shrug, “it is what it is.”
Tamara has lived in the same flat for the past 40 years. Her son, a drug addict she says nonchalantly, is in Russia. Her husband died long ago. Now, it’s just her and her cat.
Konstantinivka is 22 kilometres, about 13.5 miles west of the city of Bakhmut, scene of some of the most intense fighting in the war.
