Russia-Ukraine war live: real risk of escalating war turning into global conflict, says Poland

Recent events show that there is a real risk of a global conflict breaking out, Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, said on Friday, after Russia fired a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile at a Ukrainian city.

“The war in the east is entering a decisive phase, we feel that the unknown is approaching,” Tusk told a teachers conference, reports Reuters.

Tusk added:

COP29: Climate funding goal falls short

On the last day of the climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, a second draft agreement puts a number to crucial climate finance goal for the first time.

With negotiations running right up to the wire on the final day of talks in Baku, Azerbaijan, a second draft text has proposed developed countries should provide $250 billion per year by 2035 for developing countries to take climate action.

The figure was met with deep disappointment from observers from the developing states, who have called on industrialized nations to provide at least $1 trillion in funding.

"We are really deeply insulted by this proposal," Lydinyda Nacpil, of the Jubilee South Asia Pacific Movement, told DW.

Green spaces and social housing: Paris’s ‘bioclimatic’ plan to transform the city by 2035

The Paris City Council on Wednesday approved its "bioclimatic" urban development plan, designed to address climate challenges, housing shortages and urban expansion. The plan’s focus on green spaces, social housing and tighter rental regulations has drawn both praise for its sustainability goals and scepticism over its feasibility.

The Paris City Council on Wednesday adopted its highly anticipated local urban development plan (Plan local d’urbanisme, or PLU) after four years of intensive discussions and more than 50,000 public proposals.

The plan is built on four pillars: adapting to climate change, increasing public housing, promoting local business and preserving Paris’s architectural heritage.

“The challenge is to ensure that Paris remains the city we want to live in for generations to come,” said Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo, receiving warm applause from her majority following the vote.

Israel pounds southern Lebanon and Beirut outskirts, killing five medics

By Reuters

Israeli forces pounded southern Lebanon and the outskirts of the capital Beirut on Friday, killing at least five medics, and ground troops clashed with Hezbollah fighters in the south.
Israel has pushed on with its intense military campaign against the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, tempering hopes that efforts by a U.S. envoy will lead to an imminent ceasefire.
U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein said this week in Beirut that a truce was "within our grasp". He travelled on to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz before returning to Washington, the news outlet Axios said.

Haiti’s children ‘dragged into hell’ as gang violence rages

Many Haitian children face the stark choice of joining a gang or suffering from violence, poverty and hunger engulfing them.

Jude Chery has heard talk of armed gangs for most of his life.

The 30-year-old Haitian activist remembers that he started to learn the names of powerful gang leaders even as a child in primary school.

In the decades since, new gangs have formed, and new gang leaders — including some with international profiles — have taken over, as Haiti experienced multiple waves of political upheaval and uncertainty.

A second Australian teenager has died of suspected methanol poisoning, bringing to six the number of foreign tourists who have died after apparently drinking tainted alcohol in Laos.

The family of Holly Bowles, 19, said it was with "broken hearts" that they confirmed her death, more than a week after she fell ill in the tourist town of Vang Vieng.

Her friend Bianca Jones, also 19, and British lawyer Simone White, 28, from south-east London, were confirmed to have died on Thursday.
