In Lebanon, ‘misleading’ and sporadic Israeli evacuation orders instill fear
As it pummels Lebanon, Israel’s military fails to consistently warn residents of incoming attacks. When it does, there are sometimes mere minutes to flee.
Two-year-old Ayham Ali Mohammad sat on his grandfather’s lap eating a banana across the street from Rafik Hariri Hospital in Jnah, on Beirut’s southern periphery.
Two days earlier, on October 22, an Israeli air attack had hit the Syrian toddler’s home, burying him under the rubble and taking down multiple buildings around him.
Moscow targeted as Ukraine and Russia trade large drone attacks
Ukrainian strike on Moscow is biggest since full-scale invasion while Russia sends wave of record 145 drones

Ukraine has carried out its biggest drone strike on Moscow since Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Russian media said on Sunday, as the Kremlin launched its own record air attack over Ukraine.
Three airports in the Russian capital were temporarily closed and flights diverted. At least one person was injured. Russia said its air defences shot down 70 drones, nearly half of them in the skies above Moscow and the rest in western Russia.
The general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said it successfully targeted an ammunition dump near the Russian city of Bryansk. Video showed multiple explosions coming from warehouses on the military site. Fires could be seen burning in the night sky.
Donald Trump and the New World OrderThe End of the West
Donald Trump's return to the White House shows that liberal democracy has failed. It proved unable to provide a coherent structure to the post postwar era.
One era is coming to an end and a new one is beginning. Nothing marks this shift as clearly as the election of Donald Trump to a second term as president of the United States. The West has lost its dominance and the shared foundation of values, which has been crumbling for some time, is now collapsing. There are tensions everywhere – between countries and within societies. The right wing is on the rise in Italy, France and Germany. The West as a block of liberal democracies no longer exists.
Amsterdam police detain pro-Palestinian protesters at banned demonstration
Police detained several people Sunday for taking part in a demonstration in central Amsterdam that had been outlawed following violence targeting fans of an Israeli soccer club, a local broadcaster reported.
Dutch police arrested dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters in Amsterdam on Sunday after they defied a demonstration ban, put in place in the wake of clashes between Israeli football fans and groups of youths.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema banned all demonstrations over the weekend in the aftermath of the grim scenes of youths on scooters and on foot attacking Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters on Thursday and Friday in what was widely condemned as a violent outburst of antisemitism in the Dutch capital.
Drastic efforts needed to open door for Japan's 1st female PM
By Junko Horiuchi
The election in the United States in which Kamala Harris sought to become the country's first female president highlights a stubborn gender inequality in Japan's national politics.
Japan's recent general election saw the percentage of women in the House of Representatives rise to a modest yet record high of 15.7 percent, reflecting the tepid push by political parties and the government for greater female representation -- something some experts argue really needs radical steps, such as a mandatory electoral quota.
Why luxury cheese is being targeted by black market criminals
Dan Saladino
When dairy farmer Patrick Holden sat down at his kitchen table to read his emails one day in July, he couldn’t believe his luck. A buyer, who claimed to represent a French supermarket chain, wanted to buy 22 tonnes of Hafod, his specialist cheddar.
“It was the biggest order for our cheese we’ve ever received,” he recalls, “and, because it was from France, I thought, ‘finally, people on the continent are appreciating what we do’.”
The order had been made through Neal’s Yard Dairy, an upmarket cheese seller and wholesaler, and the first batch of Hafod arrived at its London base in September. It took up just one square metre on a pallet but represented two years of effort and had a wholesale value of £35,000.
