Israel is creating a new military dividing line in Gaza, separating off the far north of the strip, satellite images studied by BBC Verify appear to show.
Troops are in control of, and are clearing, an area across the width of north Gaza. Satellite images and videos show that hundreds of buildings have been demolished between the Mediterranean Sea and the Israel border, mostly through controlled explosions.
Images also show Israeli troops and vehicles have been stationed across the new divide. Analysts said the images suggest Gaza is being split into zones to make it easier to control.
Australia passes world-first law banning under-16s from social media despite safety concerns
Bill passes amid warning that process has been rushed and that a ban could push teenagers towards the dark web or into isolation

Australia’s parliament has passed a law that will aim to do what no other government has, and many parents have tried to: stop children from using social media. The new law was drafted in response to what the Labor prime minister, Anthony Albanese, says is a “clear, causal link between the rise of social media and the harm [to] the mental health of young Australians.”
On Thursday, parliament’s upper house, the Senate, passed a bill by 34 votes to 19 banning children under 16 from social media platforms.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba called on U.S. President Joe Biden to approve Nippon Steel Corp.’s proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel.
In a letter sent in late November, Ishiba said the deal will “enable Japanese and U.S. steel companies to combine advanced technologies and increase competitiveness, and contribute to enhancing steel production capacity and employment in the United States,” a source said.
In addition to the U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust investigation, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States is reviewing national security implications of the approximately 2 trillion yen ($13 billion) takeover, with the deadline for a decision set for late December.

Russian missile attacks have been reported across Ukraine, with emergency power outages affecting more than one million people amid freezing temperatures.
President Vladimir Putin has said 100 drones and 90 missiles were launched at Ukraine over the past two days “in response to strikes deep” inside Russia as he threatened to hit Kyiv with a new missile.
Putin was addressing a meeting of a security alliance of former Soviet countries in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, on Thursday after Ukraine said Russian missiles targeted its power infrastructure.
