‘Bully’: Iran’s Khamenei rejects Trump demands for nuclear talks
Supreme Leader Khamenei responds after US president said he had sent letter to Tehran seeking new round of talks.
The United States is not seeking negotiations with Iran but rather imposing demands on it, the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said, after US President Donald Trump said earlier this week he had sent a letter to the Iranian leadership seeking to initiate talks on a nuclear deal.
Khamenei’s comments on Saturday came after Trump said in an interview with Fox Business that “there are two ways Iran can be handled: militarily, or you make a deal” to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Officials in Tehran reiterated on Saturday they had not yet received a letter from Trump.
Dread haunts Gaza as airstrikes dent hopes of renewed ceasefire
The territory is mired in a ‘grey zone’ of uncertainty as the peace process has stalled and neither side seems willing to compromise
Sat 8 Mar 2025 17.00 GMT
Fears of a return to war in Gaza are intensifying this weekend, with faltering diplomatic efforts and almost daily airstrikes by Israeli forces in the devastated territory.
There has been relative calm in Gaza since a ceasefire for prisoners deal between Hamas and Israel came into effect in January, pausing 15 months of conflict. However, the first phase of that agreement expired more than a week ago and a second phase has stalled, leaving Gaza plunged into a “grey zone” of uncertainty.
Trump’s Scottish golf resort vandalized with red paint and course dug up over his plan ‘to ethnically cleanse Gaza’
Activists sprayed red paint across clubhouse, dug up greens and daubed slogans on walls
Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland has been vandalized by activists in response to his recent statements on Gaza.
The golf course in South Ayrshire, owned by the president, was targeted overnight on Friday, with activists painting “Gaza Is Not 4 Sale” in almost 10-foot-high letters on the lawn and damaging the greens, including the course’s most prestigious hole, used in Open Championships.
Red spray paint was used to deface the clubhouse at the 800-acre resort.
Palestine Action described it as a “direct response to the U.S. administration’s stated intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza.”
Myanmar junta chief says election to be held by January 2026
Myanmar's long-promised general election would be the first since the ruling military ousted an elected civilian government in a coup four years ago.
Myanmar's military government will hold an election in December or January, state media reported on Saturday.
Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said the votes will be "free and fair," according to the state-run newspaper Global New Light of Myanmar.
Min added that 53 political parties had already "submitted their lists" to participate.
It will be the first election since the military toppled Myanmar's democratically elected government in a coup in February 2021.
More than 600 dead in Syria clashes, Red Cross calls for ‘safe access’ for health workers
The clashes between security forces and loyalists of ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad erupted on Thursday.
The government has said it was responding to attacks from remnants of Assad’s forces and blamed “individual actions” for the rampant violence.
The revenge killings that started Friday by Sunni Muslim gunmen loyal to the government against members of Assad’s minority Alawite sect are a major blow to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the faction that led the overthrow of the former government three months ago. For decades, Alawites made up a large part of Assad’s support base.
Afghan women who fled Taliban to study abroad face return after USAID freeze

Funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), their scholarships were abruptly terminated after a funding freeze ordered by President Donald Trump when he returned to office in January.
"It was heart-breaking," one student told the BBC, speaking anonymously for fear of reprisals. "Everyone was shocked and crying. We've been told we will be sent back within two weeks."
