Earthquake in eastern Afghanistan kills hundreds, destroys villages

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake centred near the bustling eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad late Sunday killed more than 800 people and injured around 2,500, according to the Taliban government's chief spokesman. The quake razed villages in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, according to local authorities.

Desperate Afghans clawed through rubble in search of missing loved ones after a strong earthquake killed some 800 people and injured more than 2,500 in eastern Afghanistan, according to figures provided Monday by the Taliban government.

The 6.0 magnitude quake late Sunday hit towns in the province of Kunar, near the city of Jalalabad in neighboring Nangarhar province, causing extensive damage.

The deadly toll on journalists in the Gaza war

With foreign media barred, Palestinians have reported alone, facing the ‘most deliberate effort to kill and silence’ them ever

Over the past 22 months, the war in Gaza has become the most deadly conflict for journalists in history.

Last week, five Palestinian journalists – Hussam al-Masri, Mariam Abu Dagga, Mohammed Salama, Ahmed Abu Aziz and Moaz Abu Taha – were killed in a double strike on Nasser hospital by the Israeli military, bringing the total number of journalists and media workers killed in this conflict since October 2023 to at least 189, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Other groups put the tally far higher.

Ursula von der Leyen's flight en route to Bulgaria was targeted with navigation interference, which the EU says was possibly deliberately done by Russia.

The European Commission said on Monday that its president, Ursula von der Leyen, was en route to Bulgaria when her plane faced deliberate GPS jamming.

"We can confirm there was GPS jamming but the plane landed safe," said Arianna Podesta, a commission spokeswoman.

Von der Leyen's plane landed in Plovdiv airport and she is continuing her planned tour of EU countries bordering Russia and Belarus, Podesta said.

Sumud Flotilla for Gaza forced to turn back due to weather conditions

The severe winds and unpredictable nature of the Mediterranean make organisers decide to turn around and set sail later.

The Global Sumud Flotilla carrying aid to the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip has been forced to turn back due to poor weather, according to a statement by the group and sources travelling with the mission.

The flotilla said on X that strong winds on Sunday of more than 30 knots (55.6 kilometres per hour, or 34.5 miles per hour) on the Mediterranean Sea could have posed a problem for smaller boats in the convoy.

Xi and Putin stand shoulder to shoulder as China casts itself an alternative global leader

Chinese leader Xi Jinping made a veiled swipe at the United States on Monday as he criticized “bullying practices” and cast his country as a new leader of world governance, at a time when President Donald Trump’s America First foreign policy is upending the globe.

“The house rules of a few countries should not be imposed on others,” Xi told more than 20 world leaders gathering at a two-day summit orchestrated to play-up China’s global leadership and its close and enduring partnership with Russia, as the two neighbors seek to rebalance global power in their favor at the expense of the US and its allies.

Israel’s New Negotiating Stance Is Likely to Prolong Gaza War, Experts Say

A shift toward pressing for a permanent cease-fire deal, alongside plans for a new offensive in Gaza City, means the fighting is unlikely to end soon.

Reporting from Jerusalem

Over the past year, Israel has doggedly insisted that negotiations for a Gaza cease-fire be focused solely on a phased deal that would begin with a temporary truce and see some hostages released in exchange for some Palestinian prisoners, while deferring agreement on a more permanent pact.

And yet, even as Hamas recently said that it would agree to a phased deal, the Israeli government has switched gears, saying it wanted only a comprehensive deal that would free all the hostages and end the war. It is as unclear as ever how, or when, that might happen.
