Hundreds of women wearing pink and wielding broomsticks marched to parliament in Indonesia's capital on Wednesday to protest against police abuses and wasteful government spending.

Protests in Jakarta and other key cities have stretched into their second week, fuelled by anger over cost of living issues and lavish perks for MPs.

They turned violent after young motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan was killed when he was run over by a police vehicle.

Israeli drones dropped grenades near peacekeepers in south Lebanon, UN says

Unifil condemns ‘serious attack’ on Tuesday morning as it was clearing a road and adds that no one was hurt

Israeli drones dropped four grenades near UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon, the agency’s force said on Wednesday, in what it described as “one of the most serious attacks” on its personnel since a November ceasefire.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, Unifil, said the Tuesday morning attack came as it was clearing a road to a UN position close to the Israeli border, adding that no one was hurt.

Russian drone and missile strikes leave thousands without power in Ukraine

Russia fired a massive barrage of drones and missiles at targets across Ukraine on Wednesday, wounding several people in regions south and west of Kyiv and leaving thousands without power in the north. The attacks came as UK Defence Secretary John Healey arrived in Ukraine for talks on security cooperation.

Russian forces launched more than 500 drones and missiles at Ukraine in a large-scale attack that mainly targeted the west of the country and caused power outages, Ukrainian officials said Wednesday.

AFP journalists in Kyiv heard explosions ringing out over the capital and air defence systems targeting Russian drones during the attack, which coincided with Vladimir Putin's visit to China.

Israeli military pushes further into Gaza City, forcing more displacement

The Israeli military moved deeper into Gaza City on Wednesday, with soldiers and tanks pushing into Sheikh Radwan, one of the urban centre's largest and most crowded neighbourhoods.
In recent weeks, Israeli forces have advanced through Gaza City's outer suburbs and are now just a few kilometres from the city centre despite international calls to halt the offensive.

‘If they had killed me, it would have been better’

Islam’s* life was changed forever by an air strike in November 2023.

The young woman from el-Geneina, Sudan, had been preparing for her exams when a strike landed directly on her family’s home.

Now, sitting in one of the countless straw structures in a sprawling refugee camp in Adre just over the border in eastern Chad, Islam, 22, sobs as she recalls what happened to her.

China’s Xi revelled in his immaculate parade – leaving Trump to stamp his feet in Washington

Trump’s moves have undermined the West, and they’ve not only made Xi look good – but made him more powerful, writes world affairs editor Sam Kiley

Xi Jinping has it all. From Donald Trump’s perspective, the Chinese leader is basking in sycophantic bonhomie from fellow global authoritarians while enjoying a parade of tanks and stealth bombers, massive missiles, lasers and mass marches of beautifully drilled infantry.

Xi’s international prestige is at an all-time high. And Trump gave it to him.

“Today, humanity is once again faced with critical choices: peace or war? Dialogue or confrontation? Win-win co-operation or zero-sum rivalry?” Xi said.
