South Korea's 'Rasputin' refuses to leave cell to face MPs' questions
Choi Soon-Sil, a long-time friend of Park Guen-Hye, forced national assembly members to visit her in detention
The woman at the heart of the impeachment crisis surrounding South Korean President Park Geun-Hye has refused to leave her jail cell for questioning by lawmakers who had convened a special hearing at her detention centre.
Choi Soon-Sil, a long-time friend of the president, has repeatedly snubbed a parliamentary committee probing a corruption scandal that triggered Park’s impeachment earlier this month.
Currently on trial for extortion and abuse of power, Choi had ignored several summons to attend the committee’s hearings in the national assembly – prompting the lawmakers to come to her.
China sends aircraft carrier to Pacific for first time
China's navy has sent a carrier battle group to the Pacific to conduct military drills for the first time. The projection of power comes amid tensions with Taiwan and the US in the South China Sea.
China has sent its sole aircraft carrier into the western Pacific for the first time, navy officials said. The aircraft carrier Liaoning, accompanied by a battle group of seven other warships, will conduct "exercises far out at sea," the navy said without elaborating on its final destination.
"This exercise is being carried out in accordance with annual exercise plans," the navy said in a statement carried on the official People's Liberation Army Daily.
It will be the first blue-water drill for the aircraft carrier after the Liaoning conducted large-scale exercises off China's coast over the past month.
Dozens killed in attacks amid political unrest in DR Congo
Militias in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo killed at least 34 civilians over the weekend, the army and local activists said, and the violence stoked concerns over political instability.
Attacks have surged across the country in the past week alongside violent protests over President Joseph Kabila’s failure to step down at the end of his constitutional mandate on Tuesday.
While it is not clear that all the violence is related, analysts fear political instability over Kabila’s tenure is stoking localised conflicts by creating security vacuums.

"Bullseye!" he shouts.
It isn't quite a direct hit, but this journalist and famed mafia hunter doesn't easily give up.
"These are Sicily's pieces of shit," he snaps, tapping the images one by one and detailing their bone-chilling crimes: Matteo Messina Denaro, a fugitive kingpin who Forbes Magazine once ranked as one of the world's 10 most wanted men. Toto Riina and Salvatore Lo Piccolo, whose bloodlust led to countless murders during Sicily's second mafia war. Both are in prison.

Rajasthan, India - In the early morning hours outside a hospital in the city of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, a newborn baby girl - still with her umbilical cord attached - was found abandoned and in critical health. Underweight and wet after hours of intermittent rainfall throughout the night, the baby's condition deteriorated.
The infant was rushed by hospital staff to a neonatal intensive care unit and then taken to another hospital for better medical treatment. The child welfare committee in India lodged a police case for the abandonment.
