Qasem Soleimani: Stampede kills 40 mourners at burial in Iran

Forty people have been killed in a stampede as Iranians flocked to the burial of a top commander killed in a US drone strike, officials say.
The deaths in Qasem Soleimani's hometown of Kerman led to the postponement of his interment. A new time will be announced later.
Millions are already estimated to have packed the streets for a series of funeral processions in Iran.
Soleimani's killing has raised fears of a conflict between the US and Iran.
He was widely considered the second most powerful man in Iran behind Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The US saw him as a terrorist and a threat to American troops.

India campus attack: police fail to make arrests but charge injured student

Student leader beaten with iron bar during attack charged with two offences for prior incident

Police in Delhi have faced criticism for failing to arrest any members of a violent mob that stormed the campus of the Jawarharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the Indian capital, while at the same time charging a student leader beaten over the head with a metal bar with two offences.
Police have been accused of failing to intervene when about 50 masked men went on the rampage on Sunday evening, attacking students and academic staff, and vandalising buildings and property. More than 30 people were injured.
Aishe Ghosh – the leader of protests at the university in Delhi – needed about 16 stitches for a deep gash in her head. On Monday she said she only survived by falling down and playing dead, adding that she felt as if she was being “lynched”.

The move against Carole Ghosn, who is not in Japan, followed her husband's flight to Lebanon last week while he was out on bail awaiting trial for alleged financial misconduct.
Details on the allegations against Carole Ghosn were not immediately available. Japanese officials have said anyone caught helping a fugitive escape will face legal consequences.

He was taken to Bega Police Station where he was charged in connection with the lighting of seven fires.

First potentially habitable Earth-size planet discovered by TESS mission, and it's nearby

Updated 0130 GMT (0930 HKT) January 7, 2020

NASA's planet-hunting mission TESS has found its first potentially habitable exoplanet the size of Earth orbiting a star about 100 light-years from Earth, according to the agency.
The findings were announced during the 235th meeting of the American Astronomical Society on Monday in Honolulu.
The planet is part of a multi-planet system around TOI 700, a small, cool M-dwarf star in the Dorado constellation. It's only about 40% of our sun's mass and size, with half of the surface temperature.
