The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has promised tougher weapons laws and swifter enforcement of deportation rules in response to the deadly mass stabbing in the western city of Solingen, as the far right seized on public outrage in the run-up to key state elections.

Scholz laid a single white rose at the scene of Friday night’s rampage claimed by the Islamic State group in which a Syrian asylum seeker is alleged to have killed three and injured eight people attending a street festival marking the city’s 650th anniversary.

Separatist militants kill dozens in 'coordinated' attacks across Pakistan's Baluchistan province

Gunmen killed at least 39 people in multiple attacks in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province on Monday, police said. The figure includes at least 23 people who were killed after gunmen forced them off buses and vehicles in Pakistan’s Musakhail district, in one of the deadliest attacks in the southwestern province.

Separatist militants killed at least 39 people in "coordinated" attacks in southwestern Pakistan on Monday that largely targeted ethnic Punjabis, government officials said.

In one of the attacks, dozens of militants stopped vehicles travelling on a highway through Balochistan province and shot 23 people dead -- one of the worst shootings in the region in the past several years.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), the most active militant separatist group in the province, claimed responsibility for an overnight operation in a statement sent to AFP.

Canada to slap 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles

The Canadian government says it will impose a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles — matching levies introduced by the US.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles, joining the United States and European Union in imposing higher duties.

The decision was taken in response to what Ottawa identified as an effort by Chinese companies to generate a global oversupply.

Sixty global organisations have called for urgent EU action against Israel over ‘unprecedented’ media freedom violations.

Sixty global press freedom and human rights organisations have signed a letter calling on the European Union to take decisive action against Israel for its escalating violations of media freedom and the killing of journalists in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Israel.

The letter on Monday urged the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the imposition of targeted sanctions on responsible Israeli officials. It was signed by organisations including the International Press Institute (IPI), Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Free Press Unlimited (FPU).

Millions in this country are stranded by flooding. Many blame their neighbor

Wading through muddy floodwaters up to chest height, hundreds of people slowly make their way to safety, their belongings held high above their heads to keep them dry.

Entering the city of Feni in southeast Bangladesh, it becomes clear why it is described as the epicenter of one of the country’s worst floods in living memory. Since Wednesday night, water has inundated 11 districts, and large swathes of the city of nearly 1.5 million people are now submerged.

Bangladesh lives on its rivers and waterways — its people relying on the vital life source for fishing and farming rice paddies. The country is also well-acquainted with flooding and cyclones — especially in recent years, as scientists say human-caused climate change exacerbates extreme weather events.
