Six In The Morning Sunday 25 August 2024

What you need to know about the latest attacks between Israel and Hezbollah

Hezbollah’s attack was anticipated, weeks in the making against Israel’s recent targeted killings, mounting concern of regional escalation.

Hezbollah and Israeli forces have exchanged attacks across the Lebanon-Israel border in a marked escalation of the tit-for-tat engagement they have been undertaking since October 7.

What exactly happened?

Israeli jets attacked southern Lebanon in the early hours of Sunday morning, saying it was a preemptive strike against Hezbollah rocket launchers that were preparing to attack Israel.

The Russian-born founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, is due to appear in a French court later on Sunday, after his arrest at a Paris airport over alleged offences related to the messaging app.

Sources told the AFP news agency that the Franco-Russian tech billionaire would appear in court after being detained by police at Le Bourget airport. French investigators had issued a warrant for Durov’s arrest as part of an inquiry into allegations of fraud, drug trafficking, organised crime, promotion of terrorism and cyberbullying.

Durov is accused of failing to take action to curb the criminal use of his platform and was stopped after arriving in Paris from Baku on his private jet on Saturday night. “Enough of Telegram’s impunity,” said one investigator who expressed surprise that Durov flew to Paris knowing he was a wanted man.

Warsaw's Palace of CultureFrom a Symbol of Oppression to a Symbol of Subversion

The Palace of Culture in Warsaw was a "gift from Stalin" to the Polish people. They hated it at first, but slowly learned to love it. The tower has now become the landmark of a self-confident city, and one of the coolest monuments in Europe.

At the very top, the palace belongs to the birds of prey. On the door leading to the tower clock hangs a sign reading: "Please remain quiet. Peregrine falcons are nesting.” So when you gaze down at Warsaw, at the high-rises and residential towers that look rather miniature despite being 20-stories tall, you must do so quietly.

It is only up here that you realize that this building isn’t just tall, it’s absurdly tall. Fully 44 floors and 230.68 meters.
