Ukraine captures town of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region as it says advance continues

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Ukrainian forces have taken control of the Russian town of Sudzha, over a week after his forces launched a cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Kyiv’s forces have been in the town, located 105km southwest of the city of Kursk, since last Wednesday, but this is the first confirmation from the Ukrainian president that his army had captured it.

Gunn, a 36-year-old university lecturer, saw her performance in the Olympic breaking event attract widespread attention on social media. She failed to receive a single point from the judges and was knocked out at the round-robin stage.

India Independence Day: Modi condemns violence against women

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for swift justice in cases of violence against women, as protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor continue to grow.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Indian cities overnight on Wednesday to demand better safety for women following the rape and murder of a young doctor that has sparked nationwide protests.

Demonstrations have escalated since the body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was first found in a hospital in Kolkata last week, with police saying she had been raped and murdered.

Wednesday's marches, during which protesters held up banners calling to "reclaim the night," led into Thursday morning, coinciding with India's 78th Independence Day.

In July, the 99-year-old, who served in China, spoke at a meeting in Tokyo’s Asakusa district.

Fujiwara joined the Imperial Japanese Army in 1944 at the age of 19.
